hello!

As this issue of the magazine lands with you, we’re on the verge of finding out even more exciting things about our favourite game! TheMinecraft Live event is set to take place on October 16th, and with it will come news of further changes and updates. We’ll be rounding it all up for you next issue. This issue though, we’ve gone all spooky! It’s Halloween time again, and we’ve got lots and lots of ideas for you. We’re loving the builds you’re sending through too – apologies if it’s taking a little bit of time to print yours, but we’re getting through them as fast as we can! The next issue of the magazine lands just before Bonfire Night on November 4th – and just like this one, it looks…

build a floating base

WHY BUILD IN THE AIR? Mid-air bases are extremely safe, for a few reasons. The first is that it’s almost impossible for mobs to attack you, as most live on the ground or under it. Also, being high up means it’s easy to look down on mobs and pick them off from a safe range. While it’s not the easiest place to get started, and you’ll spend a lot of time transporting blocks back and forth, it IS worth it. HOW TO GET STARTED You have two choices: you can either find a floating (or nearly floating) chunk of land, or create your own. Existing floating areas are very rare and usually not very big, so expect to have to build one yourself! Creating a floating island is simple: just pick a spot…

RITUAL STONE CIRCLE BUILD There are lots of spooky things you can build, and nothing says creepy like coming across the site of a strange ritual. Clear out some space in a field or forest and you can build yourself a ritual circle. We began ours by creating a Stonehenge-style structure – gate-shaped standing stones in a small circle – make yours as big as you like. At either end, we put one larger stone to be the actual gate. In the centre, you can put a number of different things. A Nether Portal isn’t a bad idea, and it’ll heighten the idea that the ritual was one that involved some dangerous magic. You could be less scary and put in a tree or fossil – something that implies the worship of something…

defensive measures

MOAT A moat is a time-honoured tradition for defending castles, and it works just as well for any other base in Minecraft. That’s because almost all mobs find it tough to get across water. Even the ones that are happy to try swimming will be significantly slowed down by it. While they bob about in the water, you can get out your bow and arrow and take out the defenceless mobs before they arrive. A 2 x 2 trench around the thing you’re defending should be more than enough to slow things down, while being also small enough for you to jump over! LAVA DRAWBRIDGE A more advanced version of a moat might be filled with lava, and too long to jump – so how would you get over it? A drawbridge, of…

minecraft 1.18 roundup

LANDSCAPE GENERATION With the new version, the landscape in Minecraft is going to look completely different in a lot of ways, some small, some large. Hills and mountains will now appear more realistic, and caves, ravines, and other underground features will look a little different too. Badlands biomes will be smaller, rivers have been tweaked so that they merge with swamps rather than cut through them, and lakes are less likely to be placed in hot biomes. DEEP CAVES The big changes, though, are that the new subterranean caves are back – these were previewed in 1.17 pre-release snapshots, but they’re here again, bigger and better than ever. Where you used to find bedrock if you dug straight down, you now find deepslate which continues way deeper and gives worlds new caves to…

item of the month

ABOUT TRIDENTS Tridents are the only weap on that can be used for both melee and ranged combat. You can use one to hit mobs up close, like a sword, or throw it to at tack mobs that are out of its reach – although you will have to then go and collect the trident again if you want to reuse it! Tridents are one of a few uncraftable items in the game. They have a durability of 250 and lose one point of durability every time they are thrown or hit an enemy. For melee at tacks they deal 9 points of damage. If thrown they deal 8points of damage. GETTING TRIDENTS Since you cannot craft a trident, the only way to get one is to collect it from a Drowned. In the…
