boots ‘n’ all walking: an adventure for any age

HIKING, BUSHWALKING, trekking, tramping and rambling. Five universally recognised terms that all describe the favourite activity of AG Outdoor readers: walking. Whether it is a short hike with very young kids, a day walk, an overnighter or longer journey, walking is still the best way to really experience the planet. I know more than a few people who have taken extended leave and headed off into the great unknown to tackle a multi-week (even months!) walk that has seen them come back far richer for the experience than any amount of money could buy. By walking you are instantly and fully connected to your immediate environs… and its people. Few things break down barriers more easily than the sight of a backpack-carrying hiker ambling into a remote town or village. Invariably, the…

letter of the issue

FINDING INSPIRATION I would like to take this opportunity to write to you today, to share my passion and love for the wilderness that has been greatly sparked by this magazine. Here I am today, sitting in a tent somewhere north of Brisbane. Blistering heat and tropical conditions is what I face, and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. I haven’t always had the desire to explore the mundane, but there has been something within me all along, an inkling to explore… An inkling that cannot be tempered. This inkling has taken me to places that I have never dreamed of, and as I sit here in my tent, all I can think of is “where next?” Thanks to this magazine, I have the tools and the inspiration to go…

tour de yorkshire

IN 2014, THE UK county of Yorkshire had the privilege to show itself off to the world by hosting the opening stages of the Tour de France. An estimated 4.5 million people lined the roadside and around the world TV screens filled living rooms with colour and racing that reflects a part of England steeped in cycling history. After all, these are the roads on which Tom Simpson and, in more recent times, Lizzie Armistead honed their craft. Following on from this success, the Tour de Yorkshire was born; a three-stage UCI road race taking place from 29 April to 1 May, 2016. For cycling fans it’s a time of year that fills the void between the great European racing classics, such as Paris Roubaix and Flanders, and the wait for…

kimberley experience

THE KIMBERLEY REGION in northern Western Australia is one of the most remote and stunning places on the planet. At almost half a million square kilometres, it’s roughly the size of the US state of California, but with just one sealed road and about 0.001 per cent of the population. The world’s last remaining pristine savannah environment, the Kimberley is also an outdoor adventurer’s paradise – but the logistics of exploring this enormous, unspoilt remote wilderness and all it has to offer can seem intimidating, even to the most experienced trailblazers. Enter APT, which has launched the Kimberley Challenge, a new 15-day 4WD adventure program based on the tour company’s most popular existing offering, the Kimberley Complete. The Challenge is packed with longer, more extreme hikes aimed at experienced bushwalkers who can…
