Though their backstories differ, they all built thriving businesses that…

SHOP OWNERS Laura and Amy Turner ESTABLISHED 2017 SIZE 1,600+ square feet MORE INFO? boxcarquilts.com Children have a way of getting their parents to grant their hearts’ desires, and Laura Turner, owner of Box Car Quilts in Cross Roads, Texas, a community of 1,400 about 45 minutes from Dallas, is no exception. When she acquired three Singer Featherweight machines shortly after opening the store, she fell in love with them. “I quickly realized they had a loyal following,” she says. “I told my dad we should carry them.” His answer? “No.” Laura then tried to convince him that he should service Featherweights but he again said no. However, after hearing customers talking about them, he did some homework and changed his mind. “We have now sold well over 100 Featherweights, and he has serviced hundreds of them,” Laura says.…

red-roxy quilt co.

SHOP OWNERS Roxanne Schnitzler and Jessica Rediske ESTABLISHED 2013 SIZE MORE INFO? redroxyquiltco.com For a long time Roxanne Schnitzler, who had been in county law enforcement for 23 years, dreamed of owning a fabric shop. When she opened a fortune cookie that predicted “a new business venture is coming your way” and a local quilt shop in Decorah, Iowa, about 200 miles northeast of Des Moines, was put up for sale, it didn’t take long for Roxanne to talk her banker daughter, Jessica Rediske, into making her dream come true. They bought the store and stamped their style on the business, including a new name, Red-Roxy Quilt Co., a mashup of the owners’ names. “Since opening, we’ve moved the shop away from the traditional, dark fabrics of the previous owner toward a nontraditional, bright, and lively gathering place,”…
