remembering si newhouse

It is a sad time for readers of this magazine and the staff of the company which publishes it, Condé Nast. Si Newhouse, the man who built the company and directed it for more than 50 years, has died in New York after a long illness. The company Condé Nast was named after its founder, who started the publishing house in the early part of the 20th century – but it could easily be renamed the Si Newhouse Company. He started with a small enterprise which produced a few magazines (four in the US, two in Britain and two in France) and vastly expanded it while attaining new heights of publishing excellence and influence. lily hill

Lily Hill, 18, has some very impressive and very fashionable relatives : her great-grandmother was the stylish Debo, Duchess of Devonshire, the youngest Mitford sister; her great-great-uncle was Stephen Tennant, famously Bright (and intriguingly dressed) Young Thing of the decadent Twenties; and her aunt is the model Stella Tennant. Her immediate family is pretty inspirational too. The latest collection from cashmere label Brora, designed by fashion duo Teatum Jones, was conceived after a night spent at Lily’s parents’ home in the Scottish Borders, ‘surrounded by fields and forest’, smiles Lily. ‘The wi-fi doesn’t really work, there’s no signal and there’s limited hot water.’ Catherine Teatum and Rob Jones had travelled up to visit Brora’s mills and were being put up for the night by Issy Tennant, a gilder, and her…

brooches

Brooches are like jumpsuits were three years ago. You never thought you’d own one and now you have at least two. So bear with us, because brooches are not going anywhere and – eventually – your eye will adjust and you’ll have trouble leaving home without one. But we are not talking great, big, oppressive, ancestral clumps of diamonds. Lightness of touch is the key to not looking as though you’re trying to make Granny’s treasures work. Nature is a decent starting point: who doesn’t love a bee or a bird or a cosmic cluster? Good luck. It’ll be OK, we promise.…
