editor’s letter

Welcome to the new edition of Town & Country, which celebrates the people, places and landscapes that we cherish. It has long been a dream of mine to feature Stella Tennant in the Scottish hills where she grew up; so I was delighted to be given the opportunity to do so in this issue, on the occasion of her debut as a designer for Holland & Holland. Needless to say, the clothing range – which she created with her friend Isabella Cawdor – is the perfect collection for a life lived in town and country, and looks as appropriate for a London weekend as a Highland outing. I’m already planning to wear one of their beautifully cut Scottish tweed jackets to Paris Fashion Week, and see no reason why a…

contributors — autumn 2016

CHARLIE HARRINGTON The stylist and consultant studied at Central Saint Martins before working at The Independent and Evening Standard, and as a fashion director at The Sunday Telegraph. She is now a contributing fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country. See her cliff-side fashion story on page 140 (below) and her cover shoot with Stella Tennant on page 118. Autumn has arrived when… ‘I can throw on a coat and a chunky knit but still show some bare ankle.’I couldn’t get through autumn without… ‘the smell of a roaring fire, the fizz of fireworks and a delicious red wine.’ TOM CRAIG Having seen how this prize-winning photographer captures our cover star in the buttercup-filled fields of Scotland (right; page 118), it comes as no surprise that he began his career shooting…

prince harry’s birthday

The most eligible Prince in the land is celebrating his 32nd birthday, and you shall go to the ball! Take the Duchess of Cambridge or the Monégasque Princess Charlotte Casiraghi as your inspiration: their glittering gowns are the archetype of polished romance. If you’re hoping to catch the royal eye, look to Dolce & Gabbana’s fairy-tale-themed collection for dresses with Cinderella-puffed sleeves and even a glass slipper. Just don’t lose it on the staircase – unless you have a fairy godmother to magic it back. CHARLOTTE DAVEY SEE STOCKISTS FOR DETAILS. the london film festival

The London Film Festival calls for drama, so opt for theatrical glamour in a sweeping black gown and extravagant embellishment. Erdem’s sequin dress and Roger Vivier’s sparkling clutch bag are perfect for the more ethereally inclined, or smarten up in tailored pieces such as Daks’ tux-style cape or a glittering blazer from Armani. For the finishing touch, choose classic white diamond pieces like drop earrings from Cartier or a sautoir from Boodles. CD SEE STOCKISTS FOR DETAILS. a cliveden weekend

Dressed-up events in the country call for a combination of beauty and practicality. Earthy tones are always appropriate, but there is room for a little adventure too: Gucci’s printed dress is the perfect dinner-party piece, while Manolo Blahnik’s bejewelled flats will allow you to negotiate the grass without sacrificing poise. If boots must be worn, ensure they’re as polished as Chanel’ lace-ups, at home in any setting. SEE STOCKISTS FOR DETAILS. an italian wedding

The endless blue of the Amalfi Coast; the pastel shades of Portofino.. competing with such beauty is not an option, so dress to complement it. Valentino’s painterly coat was made for Venice, while Gucci’s limoncello-yellow gown will be perfect for a Sorrento ceremony. Italians are craftsmen like no others, so an embellished Armani dress or a handcrafted box bag from Dolce & Gabbana is a respectful nod to this artisanal heritage. ARV SEE STOCKISTS FOR DETAILS.
