editor’s letter

I was born a month early, at home in London on a June afternoon; and it occurs to me, all these years later, that perhaps my premature arrival was prompted by a desire not to miss a single day of summer. And even though others may express a wistful belief, as they grow older, that past summers were warmer, longer, happier, I find myself appreciating the joys of the season with ever more thankfulness than before. As a keen gardener, I have learnt to be grateful for spells of rainfall, as well as sunlight; though I confess, my dislike of midges, mosquitos and greedy lily beetles has not lessened over the years, nor have I become immune to the disappointment caused by a wet picnic or a damp and bedraggled day…

contributors – summer 2017

TOM HOLLAND One of Britain’s leading authors on the ancient world reviews Alex Preston’s latest book, As King fishers Catch Fire, on page 69. The award-winning writer also presents BBC Radio 4’s Making History. He lives in London with his wife and two daughters. An essential picnic ingredient ‘It used to be a delicately pastried pork pie but I have given up meat. How I will cope with picnics now, I have no idea.’ Favourite event of the Season ‘The cricket match we play on the summer solstice at Avebury. The backdrop to the pitch is the great earthwork that rings the stones: simultaneously eerie and beautiful.’ LUCY WORSLEY The writer, presenter and chief curator at Historic Royal Palaces walks us through Jane Austen’s Bath on page 62. Her new book, Jane Austen…

The race to be the most flamboyant filly in the Royal Enclosure should be eschewed with thoroughbred disdain. Instead, display your paddock pedigree in Ermanno Scervino’s glossy coat; Tabitha Simmons sandals allow you to canter comfortably over the turf. Gentlemen are perfectly turned-out in Oliver Brown, and shod by Crockett & Jones. Discreet charms, such as Links of London’s horseshoe ring or Dior’s tarot bag, will carry off the style stakes. A trip to Mungo & Maud will ensure your pooch is similarly well groomed. PHOTOGRAPHS: RICHARD PHIBBS, JOAN WAKEHAM/REX FEATURES/SHUTTERSTOCK, ALAMY, GETTY IMAGES, HEARST STUDIOS. treasure trove

Each summer, dealers and collectors flock to the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for Masterpiece London. One of the capital’s largest arts and antiques fairs, it sells old and new pieces side by side, so you’re as likely to spot a classical marble as you are a sculptural chair by Zaha Hadid. It attracts a similarly vibrant mix of visitors – Joanna Lumley, Anjelica Huston and Elizabeth Hurley have been spotted amid the throng. Masterpiece London (www.masterpiecefair.com) runs from 29 June to 5 July.…
