editor’s letter

Welcome to our winter issue, which is brimming with the pleasures of the season, including a cover story that is very close to our hearts – a staging of The Nutcracker with the Royal Ballet, starring Lauren Cuthbertson as the Sugar Plum Fairy. And so it was that the Town & Country team descended upon Shot-over House in Oxfordshire, with ten couture gowns, nine pairs of ballet shoes, eight diamond tiaras, seven white mice, six chiffon tutus, five brilliant ballet dancers, four boxes of gilded baubles, three wreathes of fairy lights, two miniature hot-air balloons, and a nutcracker in a pine-tree. It is creating stories such as these that make me feel lucky to be the editor of Town & Country; as well as being a timely reminder of the joys…

contributors — winter 2016

LAUREN CUTHBERTSON This Christmas, our cover star is set to grace the Royal Opera House stage as the Sugar Plum Fairy in its latest production of The Nutcracker. Born in Devon, the dancer joined the Royal Ballet in 2002 and became principal in 2008. Favourite thing about the British winter ‘I love the way we get wrapped up and pretend it’s absolutely freezing, even when it’s not.’ Favourite Christmas song ‘I have a great routine to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.’ A quirky Christmas tradition ‘I call a family meeting on Christmas Eve to make sure we are all prepped and ready for the day to run smoothly. My family roll their eyes but I know it’s the secret to success.’ REGAN CAMERON A regular contributor to Harper’s Bazaar,…

christmas carolling

To stand any chance of delivering ‘We Three Kings’ with conviction, you need to be dressed in suitably grand attire. Valentino’s starry gown echoes the glory of the night sky; make it snow-proof with elegant winter outerwear: Giorgio Armani’s velvet cape has the romantic allure of a Victorian Christmas pageant, while Alexander McQueen’s printed coat breathes the magic of Yuletide. Add a Breguet watch to keep perfect time. PHOTOGRAPHS: ELLEN VON UNWERTH, © ALPHA PRESS, GETTY IMAGES FOR BURBERRY, KAT PISIOLEK, BETHANY CRUTCHFIELD AND GRAHAM WALSER/HEARST STUDIOS…

In sporting circles, there’s no opportunity for a post-Christmas lie-in, so make sure your attire is pressed and ready. For the smart country gentleman, Oliver Brown’s tweed jacket and breeks are de rigueur, accessorised with a springer spaniel or two. The dress code is more relaxed for women, who may brighten up robust country clothing with Hermès’ charming neckerchief and a discreet scattering of David Morris diamonds. skating at somerset house

Pirouetting upon London’s prettiest ice rink has become a Christmas ritual for chic city dwellers. Snug pastel cashmere and flirty skater dresses are fit for any danseuse, but if you’re more torpid than Torvill, snuggle in Manolo Blahnik’s cosy fur-trimmed boots and a Loro Piana cape, or conjure some shimmer away from the rink with Tabitha Simmons’ sparkling pumps. what to wear to pippa middleton’s wedding

She may hitherto have been principally famous for her turn as a bridesmaid, but at long last, it is Pippa Middleton’s turn to step into the limelight. Her forthcoming wedding to the hedge funder James Matthews is undoubtedly the most eagerly anticipated society event since her sister’s nuptials five years ago. Save-the-dates are being dispatched with the couple’s Christmas cards, which allows those guests fortunate enough to make the cut plenty of time to put together the perfect outfit from top to toe. Jane Taylor’s monochrome headpiece with gossamer netting, or one of her Alice-band styles adorned with blooming posies, are elegant pretenders to greatness that have the additional advantage of not blocking anyone’s view. Reigning matriarchs should allow the Duchess of Cornwall to be an inspiration and choose a dramatic ostrich-feather…
