ed’s letter

You raised your voices and someone listened! Many readers (and viewers) complained after the announcement that DStv was going to shut down the Lifetime, History and Crime + Investigation channels. What exactly happened behind the scenes, we don’t know, but DStv renegotiated the contracts and now at least Lifetime and History will stay! And a lot of the shows on Crime + Investigation will move over to Lifetime, so it’s not completely lost. There is plenty to look forward to. On Lifetime, the new show Heartbreak Island is starting (my cup of reality shows!) as well as new seasons of Married At First Sight (I admit, I’m a fan!). And on History, new seasons of Curse Of Oak Island and Forged In Fire will start. But wait, there’s more! Lifetime…

family matters

Families are never perfect. It’s impossible for everyone to always get along and have everything the way they want. That’s what’s fun about comedy series Modern Family (2009-now – you can stream the first eight seasons on Showmax). As different as they are, the families always get along and find peace and joy and happiness. That doesn’t mean it’s plain sailing and for the Dunphy-Pritchetts, which often involves laugh-’til-you-cry episodes… SEASON 1 Moon Landing (episode 14) Jay (Ed O’Neill) is old-school. He never grew up with the gay community free and open to be who they are. But while Jay is reserved, he loves his son Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his son-in-law Cam (Eric Stonestreet), even if he doesn’t like to advertise is. So what better way for Jay and Cam to…

anel alexander

Say the name Anel Alexander and 7de Laan (2000-now) fanatics will race back to her role as church mouse Liesl Land-man (2004-2006). The actress, now starring as Susan in action series Trackers (Sundays, M-Net *101, 2019), played out Liesl’s crush on Neil Sandilands’ character Bart Kruger (2000-2005 and again in 2007) and the love-birds bonded over pigeons. Off-screen Anel is married to local actor James Alexander (or James Gracie as he is known in Los Angeles, where they have lived since 2016) – James plays Lemmer in Trackers. They married in 2003 and played a couple in Binnelanders (2005-now) back in 2007. But it was Anel’s first love – music – that originally got her hooked on TV… What was the first TV show you acted out with friends? It was the…

burning question!

Why is SABC3 repeating the 2018 season of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? We’ve seen it and it’s so old and it’s boring. There must be something better they can air? – EILEEN, SMS There are two reasons for the repeat of the 2018 special season of UK quiz gameshow Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, (1998-now), which celebrated 20 years on air with a new host: Jeremy Clarkson. “New seasons of any international content can only be approved and broadcast in the new fiscal year,” explains SABC3 publicity co-ordinator Doulha Domingo. “If the new 2019 season is made available to the channel and the rights are acquired, it will be broadcast in 2020.” Also keep in mind that the season was first aired on Saturdays in the middle of…
