Magnus Hastings, Photographer The most inspirational woman I have met was my grandmother, Marion. I had a conversation with her about my homosexuality a few weeks before she died. She showed true understanding and love although she came from a generation and background that was brought up thinking it was wrong. Right up into her eighties, she kept allowing herself to learn and listen to other people’s opinions Ciaran Munroe, Fashion intern My inspiration would have to be my mum. She raised me as a single mother in a low-income family and continues to help me in whatever way she can. Sometimes we overlook these women in our lives who have helped us tremendously. It’s important to be thankful for all they have done for us Zoe McConnell, Photographer I’ve been lucky to have worked with…

editor in chief’s letter

The government likes to believe we live in a classless society. Millions of people would argue otherwise. According to Theresa May, post-recession austerity is officially over. For the wealthy, it was never a thing. We are assured that the UK has a bright future, despite nobody in power having a clue what lies in store beyond the Brexit deadline in March 2019. Maybe for many of us things aren’t so bad, and even if life gets a bit tough, we’ll weather the storm as we did 10 years ago. Most of us can afford our rent, pay the bills, splash out on a holiday or two a year and have the occasional splurge on the high street. We can hit the Black Friday sales, put it on a credit card…

rising above the labels

What first attracted you to the world of comedy? What was your first gig? I just didn’t want to have a real job! Now I see it as a bit of a slog, but at the time I was like, “Oh yeah, this’ll be fun.” You kind of end up getting possessed by it, so it became a really time-consuming hobby. My first gig was when I was on a creative-writing course when I was 25, and at the end I did a performance. What was your big break? I met Katherine Ryan at one of my first gigs, in about 2012. She’d only done TV twice, so she wasn’t the Katherine Ryan we know and love now. I had the opening spot and she was the headliner. We hit it off, exchanged…
