ADAM DUXBURY, DEPUTY EDITOR It was 1998, Titanic fever was sweeping Britain and the 14-year-old me was not ready for Leonardo DiCaprio and his bluer-than-the-Atlantic eyes and Nineties curtains haircut. When he slipped quietly to the bottom of the ocean, my heart drowned too. I was depressed for weeks. Weirdly, I thought getting an identical haircut would help. Thanks for the most embarrassing hair chapter of my life, Leo LUCY TAYLOR, DESIGNER I had a few teenage crushes. I was very much (and still am) into “bad boy” pretty boys (weird, given that I’m married to a police officer). In particular, there was Ryan Phillippe in Cruel Intentions. Those lips and curly locks. In my later teens, I moved on to Channing Tatum during his Step Up years. With those moves he could throw…

a letter from the editor-in-chief

On the one hand, I’m thrilled to be welcoming you to what I think is a banger of an issue; I’m particularly excited to have cover stories on Ricky Martin and Kylie Minogue, as well as features on the best new LGBT-themed films, plays and TV dramas, all of which act as a reminder of how much progress we’ve made in the field of representation over recent years. I’m also thrilled to be stepping back from journalism to concentrate on my fiction. My next novel The Madonna of Bolton is published in July and it’s inspired by the emotional support I took as a young gay man from the pop music I listened to, a subject explored in this issue’s Real Life story and something I hope will connect with lots…

{ FASHION } PRETTY GREEN X KATIE EARY Pretty Green has collaborated with British designer Katie Eary for SS18 with a 16-piece capsule collection. Katie created two exclusive prints to feature on classic Pretty Green garments, including parkas, polos, shirts, bucket hats and swim shorts. Prints play a vital role in both Pretty Green’s and Katie’s aesthetic, so it’s a natural match. To celebrate the collection, Partizan’s Sophie Jones shot the campaign and a video starring British indie artist Bakar Shariff, linking the brand’s rich musical heritage with up-and-coming artists on the UK scene. prettygreen.com { THEATRE } CULT-IVATED Cult off Broadway camp classic Ruthless! The Musical has landed at London’s Arts Theatre for a 12-week run until 23 June. The show first opened 25 years ago and spoofs musicals such as Gypsy and Mame,…

niza jay ncoyini

Up-and-coming South African actor Niza Jay Ncoyini makes his debut in Oscar-nominated The Wound, a film that explores queer love and masculinity in the Xhosa community. He plays Kwanda, a closeted initiate undergoing the culture’s traditional rite of passage, guided by a caregiver who’s also closeted. It’s a sensitive subject and showing it on film is causing controversy in his home land. Later this year, Niza is set to appear in experimental film Hello au Revoir, alongside 1,500 actors from around the world. Flexing his activism chops, the 22-year-old graduate from the University of Witwatersrand’s film studies programme also co-founded The Big Gay Debate, a series of panel discussions in Johannesburg exclusively for black gay men. And over on Instagram, the self-described fem street queen knows how to serve looks from both ends…
