MATT LAMBERT, PHOTOGRAPHER The highlight of my summer was finishing the first draft of the script for my debut feature film with Jonathan Larkin, and releasing my short film Flower (pictured) which is a shame-free celebration of intimacy among friends. It can be seen free via Helix Studios HYWEL KENNEDY, DIGITAL SALES Gay Paris in the sun was my favourite part of the summer. Mincing through Le Marais, the French capital’s gay district, after a night watching fireworks shoot off the Eiffel Tower for Bastille Day (down with the aristos!) — what’s not to love? Or should I say: Qu’est-ce qu’il y a pas à ne pas aimer? Hmm, maybe not MICHAEL SEGALOV, WRITER I enjoyed nothing more than spending a hot summer afternoon with Peppermint in New York City. After walking through Harlem together,…

a letter from the editor-in-chief

It’s something that our latest cover star has experienced for himself. When Sam Smith won an Academy Award for his Bond theme Writing’s on the Wall, he made the mistake of suggesting he was the first out gay man to win an Oscar. The truth is that several out gay men have stood up on that stage and held one of the famous statuettes, just never in recognition of their acting. But, although Sam began his acceptance speech by saying he wasn’t even sure of his claim, not to mention the fact that he was nervous speaking to an estimated audience of 90 million, before he’d even made it back to his seat he was being roundly savaged on social media. And this was despite the fact — as he tells…

3 highlights at homotopia 2017

1 // Unabashed queer performer David Hoyle presents Diamond, an autobiographical piece that explores British LGBT+ history from 1957 to the present day, by weaving together intimate, personal accounts with landmark events. 2 // Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales present their original off-Broadway show The Vaudevillians. The rowdy musical comedy sees the pair take modern pop and reinterpret it in dragged up, cabaret style. 3 // Challenging homophobia and transphobia within Caribbean communities, Out is a performance piece (pictured below) about fitting in, reclaiming dancehall and celebrating queerness in the face of pressure to be black enough, straight enough and Jamaican enough. homotopia.net…

{ FASHION } UGG X JEREMY SCOTT Jeremy Scott likes a pastiche of the Nineties and Noughties so it’s no surprise that he’s collaborated with renowned footwear brand Ugg. He’s got his bedazzler out to embellish the classic boot, adding some fun flames and Swarovski crystals. It’s great timing too; we’re ready for a bit of fun with our footwear and these are throwing us right back. ugg.com { PERFORMANCE } THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME Achtung! Shape-shifter Frau Welt is the invention of Peter Clements and co-writer Oliver Dawe, who introduced the anti-heroine to audiences in 2015. Created in anticipation of the grand dame’s retirement, this new play runs from 4 until 21 October at Hackney Showroom and offers a chance to get better acquainted with Welt, charting her journey from humble beginnings…

will lucas

Singer, actor, dancer, gymnast, and cute, too: Will Lucas is one of those annoyingly talented people. He started dancing at a young age but still has to train all the time — he’s in the gym five days a week (it shows) and at dance classes whenever possible. He’s found success on the stage in several musicals — as part of the cast for the 2014 Cats UK stage tour and is currently in Wicked as Chistery, the chief flying monkey, a role he’d set his sights on since first seeing the show aged 15. Will’s also choreographing a number for this year’s edition of sizzling fundraiser West End Bares, coincidentally dubbed Ruby Strippers (geddit?), on 29 October at the Novello Theatre. Without giving too much away, Will says, “I’ve got…
