LAST MONTH, LARGE parts of the east coast of Australia were devastated by horrific bushfires. Over the course of several weeks, more than 300 blazes were recorded across NSW and Qld, with early figures suggesting more than 350 homes were destroyed and four people killed. It has been estimated the fires in NSW and Qld have destroyed more than one million hectares, with wildlife and flora obliterated. The Rural Fire Services even issued a Catastrophic fire warning in NSW for the first time. It is deeply upsetting for anyone who calls this great country home and brings back bad memories of the horrendous bushfires that flattened parts of Victoria during Black Saturday in 2009. AS WE WENT to print Daniel Sanders was crowned world champ at the International Six-Days Enduro (ISDE) in Portugal. Team U.S.A. that won the World Trophy title. It is the Yanks’ second ISDE World Trophy victory after claiming their first premier-class win in 2016. Our World Trophy squad finished second by just 1min 45sec despite the absence of Josh Strang and Daniel Milner from last year’s winning squad and a retirement. Chucky (Husqvarna) took the outright by 34sec from fast-finishing Spaniard Josep Garcia (KTM) while American Ryan Sipes (KTM) claimed third. THE DUALSPORT Motorcycle Riders’ Association (DSMRA) has confirmed the popular Kowen Forest Ride will continue into 2020 with the ride planned for 4-5 April. After another sell-out in 2019 (over 900 riders), numbers will still be capped at 1000 so get ready for when tickets go on sale. The DSMRA’s Canberra branch has a bunch of exciting new activities planned, including a Friday night ride. Details were still scarce as we went to print but the DSMRA could confirm they planned to open a quarter of one of the trails and line it with Halloween-style goodies like glow-in-the-dark skeletons and lit-up pumpkins to mark the way. Glow in the dark and reflective arrows will keep you from getting lost after the gates open from 7pm. They will close the loop at 10pm.…

THE RIDE • Exclusive access to a pine forest just near Canberra Airport called Kowen Forest. Three loops consisting of over 100km of singletrack. Knowledgeable sweeps, beginners’ training and tours. This trail is open for riding on Saturday and Sunday until mid-afternoon. THE CAMPING • Camping is included for Friday and Saturday night. In the middle of the pine forest is a huge clearing for camping. There are toilets, spare water, bins and, in the evening, a selection of food options.
