editor’s letter

MUCH ADO The previous editor in chief of this magazine, Gayle Butler, gave me some wise advice when I took over in the role. She told me how she kept a fix-it list of all the issues she was trying to remedy as a way to handle the stress of managing a large organization. Once you see problems spelled out, they merely become items waiting to be solved. From my first day at BH&G, I’ve done the same thing. I keep the list in my head, not because I have some sort of genius memory, but because I find that during the day my brain tends to naturally reorganize things by what is relatively important at any given time. I prefer my concerns to mentally shift and recalibrate instead of having them…

obsessed with art deco

With all the pomp of a Gatsby soiree, this iconic 1920s and ‘30s movement—recognizable for its repetition of geometric shapes and stylized fan motifs—is back in the spotlight. Wallpapers threaded with ribbons of gold and silver suggest the energy of a jazz tune. Velvet-covered furniture and bent rattan accessories in unexpected shapes evoke the glamour of Hollywood’s golden age. “AS EACH STYLE IS ‘REVIVED,’ IT IS REINTERPRETED BY THE NEXT GENERATION. THIS PROCESS IS ACTUALLY WHAT MAKES IT MODERN FOR ITS TIME.”STEPHEN J. BAUER, BRADBURY & BRADBURY ART WALLPAPERS…

greek-isle blue

Judging by color trends, it seems we’re all dreaming of an island escape these days. Splashed on walls, textiles, and furnishings, Mediterranean-inspired hues are usurping indigo as the blue of the moment. In a room, these shades are at once peaceful and energizing—a little like a day on the water. WHITE BATHES most of the rooms in this beach house in South Carolina, but designer Kevin Isbell saturated the entryway, which doubles as a dining room, in blue. “It creates drama when you walk in but also makes the lighter rooms seem even more voluminous by contrast,” he says. The key was finding a blue that didn’t lean too dark. “We tested many to find one that felt bright and cheerful even at night.” Woven accents have a grounding effect; hits…
