Celebrations – Over the past three months this magazine’s circulation grew from 17 000 to just over 21 000 readers, a fact certified by the Independent Audit Bureau of circulation. Multiply this by a pass-on rate of 6 readers and you get 126 000 campers, monthly, reading this magazine. A new record for this publication and a personal,“ThankYou”to all our readers and advertisers who make this magazine possible. Simply gorgeous! 2019 goes down in my books (or should that be magazines?) as the year when South Africans really became spoilt for choice, with regards to caravans, motorhomes and trailers. It all started with Mobilodge and their innovative slide-out bedroom, and now just look at the new Destination Wonder – what does it say about those people fortunate enough to be owners?…

Put a fishing rod in a man’s hands and all his stress and worries seem to ‘travel to earth’ along and down that fishing line into the water! It does not matter if there is bait on the hook or the fish are not biting, for it will only increase the pulse rate when having to strike – or remove a hooked fish! Know what I mean? Serenity with nature is what is so satisfying, and knowing that I have one of the coolest looking caravans a few steps away (nobody needs to know it’s not actually mine). Life is good. Join me as I head out of Gauteng along the M17 for a few days to explore magnificent countryside sights, make new friends, soak up the goodness of hot, mineral rich…

On a recent trip in the Discover FunX 4X4 motorhome, I had the opportunity to put it through its paces up the south coast – where I visited the Still Bay, Gourits and George areas. What a pleasure the Discoverer FunX is (see page 42), allowing us to enjoy the perfect holiday. The trip ended at George Country Resort (see page 46) where the Vervet monkeys managed to relinquish my girlfriend, Nathalie, of a loaf of bread and a tub of sweet chilli dip. It’s clear she is no good at guarding things … the very reason she is a financial controller and not a security guard. Heaven help us if she left her service pistol lying around and the monkeys annexed it and decided to take potshots at the…

OUTDOOR BLISS Hello Caravan and Outdoor Life. My family and I simply love getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and into nature. There is nothing better to reset one’s clock than dipping your feet into a cool mountain stream, walking barefoot through a shady forest and coming back to the campsite tired but completely satisfied, only to light a braai fire and tell stories late into the night. I remember when I was young, my parents would often take us to the Drakensberg to camp, and this is where my love for the outdoors was founded. We had a purple Kombi affectionately named ‘The Purple People Eater’, which we would pack with all the camping equipment and head off on our adventure. The evenings around the fire were…

When is your favourite time of the year to go camping? We all have our preferences, and not everyone can handle a busy campsite. On the other hand, some people relish the hustle and bustle of school holidays! Comments Norman Gerald Fick Anytime, anywhere is a camper’s motto. Andre van Wyk We camp anytime, but March and April is our favourite time – not too hot or cold and not too many storms, rain and wind. Bernadette Marais van Zyl We always went on holiday during June and July, but since the kids are grown-up, we go before or after the holidays. Sometimes we are lucky to have other campers in the resort, and sometimes we are the only ones in the resort. Not always nice. Ian van der Vyver January or February, when everything is green and there's lots…
