welcome

Do you remember when your friends dropped by last year, just as you packed the last few items for your annual holiday? You had the Porta-Potti in one hand and a plastic bag filled with toiletries in the other, and they were about to go jetting off to the magnificent Maldives, on the other side of the world. No more – with coronavirus shutting down world travel, it’s your turn to do a drive past because they will be staying home this year, and the next, until who knows when. You, on the other hand, will head off to places less populated in your own accommodation, accompanied by the great outdoors and with less chance of contracting a deadly virus. A friend who has an Airbnb tells me he is going to have to…

After a recent poll on our Facebook page, it is clear that many of our readers love the bushveld. I guess that is why the post of the hyena walking around inside the Lower Sabie Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, as well as the tourist vehicle that got chased by the rhino, was so popular. For those that missed this, take a look at our social media pages in this issue. I want like to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to interact with us on our different social media platforms, as well as on our Forum. Thank you for sharing your travel adventures with us by tagging us on Instagram and Facebook. It’s great to see where you are going and what you are…

This month I had the privilege of taking our Isuzu D-MAX double cab – coated in gangster black paint (Cosmic black) with matching black rims – and our trailer with the long-loan Howling Moon tent to one of the most beautiful camping resorts I have ever visited – Slanghoek. This oasis should be on every camper’s radar, it’s simply a wonderful venue. Expect lush grassed camping stands, a river running through the campsite, swimming pools, and complete quiet – with your own private shower and ablutions. You’ll certainly want to stay a few extra days. We also visit Dooringlaagte Resort, which is a great place to take the whole family. It’s brimming with activities for young and old, and its aptly named Karoo Beach Pub is the perfect place to wind…

CAMPING AND CORONAVIRUS So, to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus the president has banned any meeting or gathering of more than 100 people. Does this mean caravan parks containing 100 people are out of bounds? Must caravan parks close? Gill Saunder The Western Cape Government has seen fit to close all their municipal resorts and The Caravan Club of SA has suspended all rallies. Some privately run resorts said they although they will continue with business as normal, they will be making additional safety measures for their guests. This includes guests declaring their state of health on entry to the resort and if ill refused admission; of not allowing more than the 100 people limit in the resort; some will not be taking group bookings during school holidays or long weekends;…

FROM OUR FORUM Every month we publish the most interesting online Forum posts in the magazine. If you want your question, destination review, or letter to be published, make sure to post it on the Forum on our website. CAMPFIRE CHAT Groundsheet advice needed I am looking for one of those really thick groundsheets to put under our canvas tent to stop thorns making holes in the floor of the tent. I seem to remember some ‘fancy’ groundsheets being sold a few years back – thick ones that allowed sand to fall through but not to come up through the groundsheet. But I can’t seem to find them in any shops or online. Mel D CARAVANS, MOTORHOMES & TRAILERS Caravan Height I’m in the market to buy a new or immaculate used caravan, but the height restriction…

WE ASKED, YOU VOTED Do you prefer camping at a destination close to the beach, or a camping safari somewhere in the bushveld? Take me to the beach! 21,2% Bushveld for me, please 42 ! 6% I like both equally. 36,2% Visitor in the Lower Sabie campsite, in Kruger National Park Richard Grant, from Richard Grant Photography on Facebook, shared a video on Facebook of – as he describes – a: “Late night visitor to our Lower Sabie campsite, Monday this week (2 March 2020).” The video was taken by his neighbour, Bob, who had a 'trail cam’ motion sensor on his caravan. The South African National Parks did respond, however, and said that camp management and the ranger are aware of this hyena and have a cage already set for it, in order to try…
