I have been publishing Caravan & Outdoor Life for over 40 years, and 2017 must surely go down as one of the most challenging for the industry – from product manufacturing to resort occupation levels. The year started with the biggest caravan manufacturer in South Africa, Jurgens CI, finding themselves with new owners who have not worked in the industry before, and when given the keys to the factory door walked straight into an ugly strike. This, at a time when production lines were changing to a brand new model range. The timing could not have been worse! 'Tis the season to be jolly – and at Caravan & Outdoor Life, we certainly have a lot to celebrate at the end of this year. The last couple of months have been ones of blood, sweat and tears as our team put in superhuman extra effort to launch Kamp & Karavaan, the Afrikaans edition of Caravan & Outdoor Life. There were a couple of bumps in the road, but as we now publish our fifth edition, I feel we have made it to the top of the mountain and can start enjoying the view. At some SANParks camps there are sites numbered with a“C”, which are for caravans, and others which are marked with a“T”for tents. At Addo, most of the T sites are smaller than the C sites. At Berg Zebra Park, the majority of the sites are paved and the T and C sites are of equal size. When you book, and when you arrive at reception at the parks, nobody asks you whether you have a caravan, trailer, or tent, and the usual thing you are told is that you can set up…

WHAT’S THE POINT? Earlier this year, the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) amendment moved a step closer to being signed into law. The amendments pave the way for the implementation of the points-demerit system. Demerit points are issued for traffic infringements – for every point obtained above 12, your licence will be suspended for three months. Amongst the amendments is the complete removal of the courts from the Aarto process, replacing them with a compulsion to make written representations to the Road Traffic Infringement Authority. Many have raised concerns about the amendment, saying it will turn into a bureaucratic nightmare. Here’s what our readers had to say online about the amendment… Comments Trudi Schoeman Only if it includes all drivers and it can be proven to happen without corruption, including blue light brigades…
