TRIUMPH SPECIALISTS ACE CLASSICS in south London have become experts in Steve McQueen replicas, thanks to a steady flow of commission builds from Cedric Colaert, a French-based McQueen fanatic. When he ordered a replica of Steve McQueen’s bike from the World War II movie The Great Escape, he already had Ace Classics-built replicas of the film star’s 1964 ISDT Triumph, 1961 TR6 desert sled racer and 1963 T120 TT racer. This latest build is based on a 1961 TR6R, as per the bike in the film. “We originally planned to use a complete machine as the donor bike, but then found a matching numbers 1961 Triumph in bits and used that instead,” says Kev Rushworth, son of Ace Classics owner, Cliff. ‘FIRST RUN IN 1924, THE SUCCESS OF THIS YEAR’S EVENT MEANS IT COULD BECOME A BIENNIAL FEATURE’ THE VINTAGE AND classic bikes returned to Adelaide’s Sellicks Beach this year, with many riders from the 2017 event returning. First run in 1924, this event was a crowd-pleasing tradition that lasted until 1957. It was revived in 1986 and 1992, then 2017. The success of this year’s event, which attracted riders from around Australia on machinery dating from the 1920s to the early 1960s, means it could become a regular biennial feature of the antipodean vintage and classic calendar. WHEN SOMEONE MENTIONS classic racing, the image conjured up for some is one of elderly gents trundling round with silk scarves trailing in the wind. But that is far from the truth. In fact, competitors range from teenagers to those in their early 80s and the racing is the highest quality you’ll find in the classic world. The range of bikes is enormous, too: the Classic class encompasses marques such as Norton, Matchless, Triumph, BSA and Ariel, with a National ACU championship for the 500cc ‘Blue Riband’ class.
