21 years of Computer Music! It might not mean a lot to some, but our history just happens to traverse the most innovative years of music production… on a technology level anyway. At the start of this magazine’s existence, the very thought of a studio being ‘virtual’, was just that: an idea in the mind of a developer (and probably one from Hamburg). We knew the computer could end up being a powerful studio but, really, not many of us believed it would happen with such ease. So, as we enjoy our 21st birthday, it seems like a good idea for a forward-thinking tech magazine, to, well, look back over that period and celebrate those ground-breaking moments – the gear, the people and the technique. Sugar Bytes DrumComputer Drum machine with synthesis styles, sequencing, processing and modulation It’s been a while since we saw anything new from German music software powerhouse Sugar Bytes, but their latest release aims to reward our patience in a grand percussive style. DrumComputer is – you won’t be surprised to learn – a virtual drum machine in which eight separate and self-contained engines are programmed, modulated, processed and collectively sequenced via a typically colourful and empowering interface. Each engine is based on a trio of synth modules, which are layered to create a single drum or percussion sound. The Resonator module is an 808-inspired analogue-style synth; Wavetable is a wavetable synth with a big library of wavetables and the ability to import external ones; and Resynth turns samples into ‘noise tables’, allowing for…

Eventide on Q As far as iOS goes, there’s no stopping Eventide. As we type, their latest release is QVox, a 4-voice diatonic pitchshifting and delay effect. As well as enabling you to create vocal harmonies, this can be used to create rhythmic textures and to add width. You can set the key, scale, and each voice’s pitch interval, while multiple parameters can be tweaked together using the ribbon controller. QVox can be had for £14.99 and runs on both iPhone/iPad. A grand combo Klevgrand have probably achieved a first with Hillman: we’ve certainly never seen an instrument inspired by combo organs, string machines and other vintage gear before. The result is a 4-voice ‘vintage combo synth’; choose from one of four waveforms for each voice, tweak the ADSR envelope, dial in…

“Open Captain for the first time and improve your workflow…” cm Tell us a little about Mixed In Key. SS “The first version was released in 2006, a program that analyses the key of tracks, so DJs can choose ones for mixes that are compatible. Mixed In Key has launched different products for analysing music, making mashups, improving the quality of files, meta-data organisation, live DJ performance, music composition, and more. “In 2018, Mixed In Key began creating plugins for music production and launched Captain Plugins – a series that connect to each other and allow users to write chords, basslines and melodies in the same key. In 2019, Captain Beat was released; it’s a new plugin that allows beat-makers to easily create percussive patterns.” cm What was the original design brief behind Captain…
