• Look out for trees that give great autumn colour from foliage, bark and berries. These include maples, prunus, sorbus and silver birch. • Choose shrubs with colourful stems, such as cornus. Cut back hard in the spring before the leaves emerge and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful reds, oranges and yellows in winter. • Leave seedheads on for their striking forms, especially phlomis, alliums and giant scabious. • Consider grasses for the graceful movement and golden, arching flowerheads that catch the sun. • Avoid cutting down weather- resistant herbaceous plants with good structure, like veronicastrum. • Plant evergreen shrubs to add interest in borders after herbaceous blooms have died back.…
