Their plot includes a former miner’s cottage, artfully transformed into a wellness retreat, a sustainable micro flower farm planted by the couple, and a venue for workshops and weddings. ‘I grew up on the coast surrounded by land, sea and flowers,’ says Sandy. ‘My late father was an aviation designer for Air New Zealand and our home was always alive with neighbours, friends and international colleagues. I wanted to replicate that energy and harboured a desire to create a rural…

Joanna and Simon Binder are known in their circle of friends as fantastic hosts. For Simon, who works in the restaurant business, and Joanna, who is the managing director of interior design firm Sims Hilditch, cooking and entertaining comes naturally. In 2010, the couple, who had enjoyed many weekends in the countryside around Bath, moved permanently to a cottage in a Wiltshire village. After renovating the cottage, building the new barn extension was the game changer that allowed them to cater for all their friends and extended family who come to visit. “WE DIDN’T CONDITION THE OAK SO IT HAS TAKEN ON AN AGED, SILVERED LOOK THAT RESEMBLES THE FARM BUILDINGS IT REPLACED ❞ The barn replaces some old stables and is connected to the kitchen in the cottage via a brick-built…
