It’s a great example of the sort of innovative thinking that is coming out of regional Australia, thinking that is particularly groundbreaking. And who spoke these words ? Charlie Arnott, the winner of Country Style’s Top 30 People and People’s Choice Awards, said this to our writer Claire Mactaggart as he explained how he noticed by chance an ad in his local newspaper for a course called Profiting from Drought. He decided to go and it completely changed the way he thought about how he ran Hanaminno, his 2143–hectare property near Boorowa on the South West Slopes of NSW. Dairy farmers Sue and Mat Daubney are another example of great innovators. At The Creamery, the state-of-the-art milking facility they built in 2018, the cows — or “the girls” as Sue and…

TAHNEE CARROLL This Sydney–based stylist went to Lennox Head on the north coast of NSW for our story about Sara and Christian von Trzcinski’s home on page 50. “I love that I’m basically a glorified shopper,” says the talented stylist. “I get to source incredible products for shoots — although it all goes back afterwards, which is the sad part.” Tahnee was really impressed with the von Trzcinski family’s home and found the story of their renovation inspiring. “They took a dilapidated Queenslander, slapped it on a truck and moved it to Lennox Head, completed almost the entire reno themselves and reduced landfill in the process,” she says. Tahnee is no stranger to northern NSW and first visited the Byron area on a family holiday when she was eight years old. “I…

This gorgeous bedroom was once the ballroom of a grand homestead. Built in the 1820s, Mylora is now home to Angus and Emma Graham, who run the 3200-hectare property as a mixed sheep and cropping operation, and are in the process of restoring the house. “Gus is hard yakka but there’s a romantic side to him,” says Emma. “We haven’t used an architect or a designer for anything in the house. It has all been him.” Photography @lisacohenphoto Styling @becksimonstylist In May we met the teachers who became flower farmers and allowed us to shoot this beautiful cover in a field of dahlias on their property at Lyonville, Victoria. Janae and Chris Paquin-Bowden of @fleurs_de_lyonville grow sweet peas, hydrangeas and ranunculus, as well as natives. In Binalong, NSW, we found a…

THE TOWN TIME FORGOT Over Easter we were fortunate to visit the lovely town of Carcoar, NSW. Why did we go there? Thanks to you, Country Style. Prior to the October issue last year, featuring Belinda Satterthwaite of Carcoar, her beautiful homewares shop, Tomolly, and her own lovely home, we had not heard of Carcoar. My husband and I fell in love with this unique, special country town. We stayed at the local hotel and appreciated its warm hospitality. We enjoyed visiting the local courthouse, where we learnt about its history, including the bushrangers. We stepped back in time when we walked through the door of the Toy Museum: so many childhood memories returned. We strolled along the streets admiring the old homes and kept muttering, “One day… one of these may…

MY MARE, GEM, watches me from her favourite paddock. She does that sometimes, peering in through the windows of the house. I slip on my elastic–sided boots and join her in the milky winter sunshine. I let her snuffle at my baby’s pink–cheeked face. For a moment, we are still. Gem smells of everything wild and lovely. She smells of wind and rain; of dirt and green. Horses are like that. They get into your blood. You feel the ridden world in the same way that you feel the drag of waves after a day in the ocean, long after you’ve stepped back onto land. The breath and footfalls of a well–loved horse are as familiar as a pulse. When Gem was barely broken in and I was a teenager, we’d wander…
