carols at christmas

Meet the designer Joanne Aston Joanne is Design Manager for Coats Crafts and has a degree in Fashion and Textiles. She enjoys creating large cross stitch and tapestry designs As a designer for Coats Crafts, I’m often asked to create traditional Christmas scenes like this one, and they’ve become a bit of a speciality, so I’m delighted to design this one for Cross Stitch Gold . Who doesn’t love the sound of well-loved Christmas carols being sung? There’s nothing quite like it, especially when you’re cosy indoors, wrapping presents on Christmas Eve or adding the finishing touches to the Christmas cake. I can’t remember the last time carollers came to my door, so perhaps the tradition needs a bit of a boost – and perhaps my design will help to do just that!…

joanne aston’s designer secrets

All aglow A winter scene can too often feel cold if it features lots of snow and icy colours, but this one is very warm thanks to the red door, the brickwork, and the golden glow from the windows and lamps. I hope you still get the impression that it s a crisp, cold night from all that snow, but it was important that this scene feels welcoming and warm, too. A fine tradition Many of the carols that we sing today originated during Victorian times. The Victorians loved music and began to sing old medieval English carols as part of their holiday celebrations. Travelling from door to door and performing in the snow, they would be rewarded with mince pies, a warm drink, or money, which was sometimes given to charity.…

Paws for thought I just had to sew this design by Maria Diaz. The moment I saw it I was reminded of the dog our family had when I was growing up. It is so alike I had to give him the same name, which is Spot. Like most families we had a number of pets, but Spot was always my favourite and this picture will be something to remember him by. Mjoeb!Xftu-!Jtm!pg!Nbo Zeena: What a lovely looking dog, Linda – and a fitting tribute to your canine friend. First Christmas I wanted to show you my latest work, which I stitched for my grandchild Flaminia for her first Christmas. I follow Dsptt!Tuudi ! Hpm e magazine with great pleasure and enthusiam! hpme star letter

Reunited! Eight years ago, we discovered some relatives of my husband, who we had never met, living in Austria. My husband knew he had three half brothers from his father’s previous marriage, but there seemed to be no record that we could find. My husband’s father was in his late fifties when my husband was born, so the search was difficult. We then received an e-mail searching for our family, and discovered our nephew Paul, born to one of my husband’s half brothers. His wife Ingrid, their two daughters and their children are now very much part of our family. One of their daughters, Samantha, gave birth recently to our great, great niece, Matilda. I stitched this picture, including the names of our other great, great niece and nephew. Paul and…

She lives and works in South Africa Christmas is a great chance to relive childhood memories and bring a bit of magic back into your life. I enjoyed doing this as I was designing this piece – it’s fun to escape into a world where nothing matters other than waking up on Christmas morning to a stocking filled with presents! Help to get your children excited about the season by stitching this design of Santa and his snowman pals, worked on ice blue evenweave for a winter wonderland feel. The colours are Christmassy but still soft, to create a festive scene that’s light and bright. Metallic white thread adds a subtle sparkle to the snowflakes,…
