ed’s letter

You may already know that from this issue on, FAIRLADY will be published once every two months, as opposed to monthly. It’s very sad for us, for many reasons, but at the same time we do understand that it’s the right decision to make in this economic climate, not only because of what it costs to put the magazine together but also because of what it costs you, our beloved readers, to buy it. We’re mindful that we’re all living through seriously tough times, and if this allows us to navigate our way through them, then we’re all for whatever changes we have to make. Above all, we’re delighted still to be here, and we know we have you to thank for that. Putting this bumper book together (64 extra pages!) has also…

what i’m loving

Shining Girl Lauren Beukes Lauren is a phenomenon anyway, but I especially love her this month for getting a FULL-PAGE glowing review in The New York Times for Afterland, her most recent book – by none other than Stephen King. I don’t think it gets much better than that. Oh yes, George R. R. Martin also called her a ‘major, major talent’. So there’s that, too. She’s a proper South African superstar. Possibly the Coolest Couple in the world Chang Wan-ji and Hsu Sho-er – both well into their 80s – own Wansho, a laundromat in Taiwan, and they pose together in outfits put together from clothes that customers have forgotten to collect. Styled by their grandson, Reef Chang, they manage to look incredibly hip and cool… and Chang Wan-Ji’s eyebrows are an…

WINNING LETTER UNREALISTIC Seriously, FAIRLADY? That is the most representative photo you or your source agency could find to illustrate beauty tweakments [August 2020] and those who need or have them? I respect your publication immensely, but please assume we have some intelligence and do not use a filtered picture of a model who is 25 at best and has perfect skin and features. Rather illustrate your article with a picture of the types of issues that need ‘tweaking’, and the results of such procedures in various age groups. To my mind, the picture ranks up there with pictures of models in their 20s illustrating products for the 50-and-over age group, or swimsuit designs for women with very ample boobs illustrated by a model who is maybe a 32B cup at most –…

what we love this month

COMFORT READ Reading Love for Imperfect Things by ‘Twitter monk’ Haemin Sunim was my way of mourning the year that could’ve been. In March, I was supposed to have a huge party to celebrate my engagement. In June, I was supposed to explore Europe by train. And, in December, I planned to walk down the aisle in a church filled with more than a hundred of my closest friends and family. There’s no better time to pick up this book as an act of self-love. It helped me find the beauty and joy in things that are imperfect; things that go wrong. The artwork inside, by Lisk Feng, is beautiful and calming, and reminds me of the joy in simple pleasures. And Haemin’s kind words and assuring revelations will help you reflect…

good hair days

After searching for almost a year, I finally found the perfect hair salon when I walked through the doors of Palladium Hair Company in the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village. From that moment on, I knew this was where I would spend my Saturday mornings. I’m talking about killer blowouts, bubbly, insane head massages and staff members who feel like family. When my parents visited me in Cape Town, I took my mom there to get her hair done and I was so touched by the extra care they took with her. They even offered my dad a facial on the house, and he promptly fell asleep. My Saturday hair routine is one of the few things that keeps me sane, and I just want to say a big ‘thank you’ to the…
