In 1959, Truman Capote, who had already made a name for himself with his short stories for Harper’s Bazaar, contributed an essay for the magazine entitled ‘A Gathering of Swans’. It was one of Capote’s defining moments – his association with a group of society beauties that he christened the Swans – and so, too, the idea of swan-like elegance became part of Bazaar’s mythology. Hence my idea of creating a cover story that referenced that past iconography, but with a playful contemporary spirit. With this in mind, it’s worth quoting the opening of Capote’s essay, which is itself a quotation (though quite possibly, a fiction): ‘From the journal of a Mr. Patrick Conway, aged 17, during the course of a visit to Bruges in the year 1800: “Sat on the…
