Leafing through previous copies of our magazine, I happened upon last February’s editor’s letter, written by our editorial director Sarah Spiteri. In it, she expressed how she believed that the shift towards seeing our homes as sanctuaries was a permanent one. Twelve months on and, indeed, home continues to be unprecedentedly important as a place of comfort. The sash window is a technological masterpiece. In the summer, with top and bottom sash drawn to the middle, it is the perfect ventilation device for a room with cool air coming in the low opening and warm air leaving through the top. The sash design perfectly suits a ‘breathing’ building and they look great, too, with their lovely vertical proportions. When fires heated every room in our homes, the drafts the windows gave were effectively ‘draw’ for the fire and while inefficient, they were part of the system of the building. With modern central heating, the drafts are intolerable and wasteful in an age where energy use is a serious ethical issue.
