As the weather turns from spring to summer in the northern hemisphere, paddlers around the world are dusting off gear for their preferred paddlesport. Whether or not we braved the cold of winter, from stand up paddleboards to fishing kayaks, whitewater kayak to canoes, touring boats to surf skis, with warmer weather and rising rivers comes the irresistible thirst to get outside, soak up some sun, grab a paddle, and immerse ourselves in the outdoors. And, while there are many reasons why people paddle one thing is true for all of us. We love to paddle. We live to paddle. This is one reason why we release our annual SUP World Mag/Paddle World Mag in celebration of our love of Paddlesports and its culture. Every year, the magazine aims to laud notable…

the ultimate adventucation combining rest and relaxation with the spirit of adventure in the florida keys

“I LEARNED VERY QUICKLY THAT CAMPING OPTIONS, OR ANY OTHER ACCOMMODATION FOR THAT MATTER, WERE SPARSE IN THE KEYS” My entire adult life has revolved around the pursuit of adventure in one form or another, with a vast majority of my “vacation” time spent rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, etc. But occasionally, after a particularly lengthy and intense adrenaline-drenched experience, rather than feeling refreshed and invigorated like in my younger years, I find myself drained both mentally and physically, and longing for a relaxing reprieve: a normal vacation. I wonder what it would be like to sit on the beach with a book and an umbrella drink, to while away the hours doing absolutely nothing. I’ve even tried it a couple of times and enjoyed it immensely, but in reality,…

PADDLING SKILLS While the paddling is relatively straight forward and capsizing at sea is highly unlikely, you must be comfortable re-entering your kayak in open water. SAFETY EQUIPMENT A communication device is critical. We brought both a VHF radio and a Garmin InReach and carried them in two separate boats. We also each carried a signal mirror, flare, whistle, headlamp, and bilge pump. NAVIGATION The Keys are comprised of over 1700 islands that span almost 200 square miles, and navigation proved to be the most difficult part of our expedition. GPS: I used GoogleEarth to establish our route and downloaded the information to a Garmin InReach. However, the Keys are an ever-changing landscape. The satellite imagery was a great starting point, but not 100% accurate. Nautical Charts: We kept nautical charts at the ready. However, just like the GPS,…

the wild waters of skåne a voyage of discovery across sweden’s skåne province via paddle.

A mammoth skeleton blocks our path around the next bend. As we paddle a few cautious strokes closer, the bony frame of the primitive beast constantly tumbling around in the burbling water reveals itself to be the remnants of an enormous spruce that has fallen across the Holjeån River. This river, in the north-east of the southern Swedish province of Skåne, also known as Scania, flows in wide loops from Östafors Bruk, through lush meadows and pristine nature before finally disgorging its waters into the lake of Ivösjön. With its wild riverbanks and massive tree trunks, it feels as though we are exploring a prehistoric land. The river is the first of three disciplines in our personal triathlon on the waters of Skåne. Jean-Luc, Justin and I have set ourselves the…

LETTMANN - SKAGGERAK EXPEDITION PLUS The Lettmann ‘‘Skagerrak” is our very new sea kayak, designed either for tall and heavy kayakers or for super long trips with tons of luggage. Although the ‘‘Skagerrak’’ is a kayak with lots of volume, it is also a sportive kayak with with high directional stability that is still easy to carve and surf. The Skagerrak’s gimmick lies under the water with the unique and innovative skeg rudder system invented by Lettmann that combines the classical skeg’s function with a rudder’s advantages. It provides the perfect way to get used to working with a skeg - but you can easily use it as a wholesome rudder that makes it easier to navigate in rough conditions. As the HV was such a success, we decided to build…
