editor’s note

DEAR READER, Thank you for picking up this last knitscene issue of 2019. It’s been a whirlwind of an editorial and calendar year. We started off the year with the plan to use 2019 knitscene issues to explore the elements through knitwear—in spring we played with air, in summer with fire, and in fall with water. This Winter issue was slated to be all about earth, but the direction shifted a bit, as did our staff at the time of its initial development. This issue is a blend of ideas from different creative minds all swirled together over the course of ten months. The final product from all these different creative sparks converging is something you’ll be able to use in your everyday life. You’ll be able to choose from two practical…

stix yarn

A recent weekend trip to Yellowstone National Park allowed me the chance to visit Stix, a wonderful local yarn shop in Bozeman, Montana. Sitting for a chat with co-owner Tracy St. John, I learned that I’m not the only fiber-seeking vacationer who makes a special trip to the LYS. “We are kind of atypical in the yarn industry because summer is one of our busier times of the year,” Tracy said. “We’re super busy because of our proximity to Yellowstone. I think a lot of people come through here on their way to [Yellowstone], and local yarn is the first thing people want to pick up.” Lucky for me—and all the tourists who visit from around the world—Stix has a section dedicated to their amazing local dyers, spinners, and artists. The store’s shelves…

anxiety & knitting

It has been my personal experience that the things that change your life the most happen very suddenly and are rarely ever planned. This is not a profound observation, but it certainly applies to how anxiety turned my life a little sideways. He was prescribed some medicine, and we thought that was that. I would say we were young and naïve, but we were also complacent in understanding what something such as struggling with anxiety actually meant. Then, when we were two small kids deep in a new home and my husband was enjoying a budding career, the medicine stopped working. I…
