meet the team

NEIL WATTERSON EDITOR’S WELCOME If you’re anything like me, you may have put off planning a holiday until there was clarity on where you could go. But now quarantine is starting to be enforced following overseas trips - which has caught out a couple of the extended LRO team - there’s never been a better time to stay at home. Or at least to explore the best Britain has to offer. I hate the word ‘staycation’, but it is the word of the moment as more of us holiday closer to home. And because the UK weather is generally favourable right through to October, there’s still plenty of time to head off into the hills with your Land Rover, whether for a good day out or a longer break. We’ve been savouring the delights…

go wild in the country

So, I’m picking up my new Defender on Wednesday and going wild-camping in the Scottish Highlands at the weekend - would you fancy tagging along?’ asked Jon Roberts from the G4 Owners’ Club. ‘Would I? Do bears, er, live in the woods?’ I didn’t even need to think about it. The LRO Discovery 3 was duly packed: camping kit, recovery gear and an extra spare wheel so I wouldn’t have to rely on a spacesaver if I suffered a puncture on the trails. In fact, the only thing I didn’t seem to pack was the sunshine. Needless to say it’s raining when I arrive at our meet point at 4x4 Tours Scotland at Kinloch Laggan, Inverness-shire; I’m fairly familiar with it, having been here three times before. It’s not long before Jon and…

…and some new powertrains

A raft of new diesel Ingenium engines are coming to the Evoque and Disco Sport. D165 and D200 4cyl units offering 161bhp and 201bhp respectively are complemented by mild hybrid (MHEV) systems when bought as automatics. Manual versions are available, but you’re limited to 2WD. The new engines are lighter and more powerful, while still returning a claimed 40mpg or so. A more powerful P290 four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged petrol engine pumping out a healthy 286bhp will be available for the Discovery Sport Black. This unit promises fuel economy figures around 28mpg and will give acceleration from 0-60mph in just seven seconds.…

a breath of fresh air…

Both the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport have been updated in the past couple of years, but that hasn’t stopped Land Rover from improving them. For the 2021 model year, the big news is Cabin Air Filtration, which works in partnership with the existing ionisation technology, filtering out fine particulate matter, allergens, pollen and even strong odours. Selected through the updated Pivi infotainment system, the system shows you the air quality both inside and outside the car - and will automatically switch to recirculation mode if it detects harmful gases or even high levels of pollen. The Evoque and Sport get the Pivi and Pivi Pro infotainment systems - as featured on the new Defender. This is built around a new Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) and includes the ability to connect two…
