welcome

My family always teases me about how cross I get over Christmas decorations. Not the fact that they arrive too early in shops or that they’re often tacky and terrible. That bit doesn’t bother me. No, it’s the Northern Hemisphere’s influence on everything that really gets my goat. Finally the sun is shining down on us, and we start spray-painting snowflakes on our windows and slaving over a hot stove. (For the record, I’m perfectly partial to roast turkey and brandy-soaked pudding, but strictly during July.) Yes, we are slowly starting to put our stamp on things. Alongside frosty scenes from faraway climes, there are also cards featuring Santa sitting on the beach, pohutukawa trees in full bloom. At home, I’m making a stand with a small pair of sparkly jandals…

inspiring read

Hi there, I love your mag! Here are my thoughts regarding the article ‘The Joy of Messing Up’ in your November issue. As a mum of two school children, this article really resonated with me as I regularly have to remind them when they’re learning something new that it takes patience and practise, practise, practise! Mistakes are all part of the process and I’m so proud that at their school, ‘growth mind-set’ (growing new neural connections) is also taught, encouraged and implemented. You think this ‘growing new neural connections’ applies only to kids, but this lesson is one we all can embrace – as a young adult patient of mine reminded me last week. She said, “Everyone runs their own race.” It was a wonderful reminder to stop fearing failure…

the hot list

1 THE FEEL-GOOD FILM… If yuletide favourite Love Actually is always on your holiday watch list, then consider bucking tradition and check out Last Christmas at the movies. It stars Emilia Clarke, of Game of Thrones fame, and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), as well as Emma Thompson who also co-wrote the screenplay. Directed by Paul Feig, who gave us Bridesmaids, this has all the Noel feels and a sure-fire clincher– not only is it based on the iconic festive song by Wham! the George Michael-heavy soundtrack will premiere some previously unreleased material from the late Grammy Award winner. In cinemas from November 13. 2 THE POTION… In the busyness of this month prior to the holiday break when you’re inwardly crying out for a bit of quiet time, take heart…

My typical day... I’ve got a nearly two-year-old, so my usual morning routine is being woken up by her. She’s just started stringing a lot of words and sentences together, and I don’t know what this says about my parenting, but it’s usually a little tap on my face and “Mumma, TV, chocolate” – just the things that she wants – the remote, TV, chocolate, okay. That’s my usual start to the day – being woken up early by a very chirpy toddler. I don’t get to sleep in any more – that would be a luxury. Workwise, currently it’s the classic parent with young children trying to juggle everything, and figuring out how to parent and work at the same time. Because I have a flexible job in the arts, and…
