michaela’s got that animal magic!

It was a real pleasure to meet Michaela Strachan for our cover shoot this month. She’s full of energy, fun and warmth and, after battling through breast cancer, she’s now five years on from her diagnosis and feeling fantastic! She certainly looked it, and there was no doubt about her passion for wildlife, too. We hadn’t planned on having a dog in the shots, until Michaela spotted a German shepherd in the studio next door and asked the owner if she could borrow him. She and the puppy, Hanno, got on very well, as our fun pictures show (page 10). So big thanks to Olivia for lending us her gorgeous dog! And, as Michaela is back on our screens this month with Autumnwatch, it seems only right that we capture…

‘it’s so great feeling fantastic again’

This October, Michaela, 53, is back on our screens to present BBC Two’s Autumnwatch, alongside co-hosts Chris Packham, Gillian Burke and Iolo Williams. Presenting the show from the Cairngorms in Scotland means she’s a long way from her home in South Africa’s Cape Town, where she lives with her partner, cameraman Nick Chevallier, and 14-year-old son, Ollie. She also has three grown-up stepchildren. WORKING IN THE WILD When I joined Autumnwatch in 2011, people were terribly critical of me. I was standing in for Kate Humble and, naturally, the viewers didn’t like someone taking her place. It meant there was a hell of a lot of negative feedback, which was hard to take. Then, Kate decided not to return to the show, and I suppose everyone had to get used to me! I enjoy…

coat tales

In your stride Reach new heights in the style stakes with a practical puffa. Toasty warm, sporty and with a new-season twist, this longer, quilted version looks sleeker than its cropped counterparts. Wear it loose and casual, or with a belt to cinch in at the waist – duvet days have never looked so stylish. Out of the blue Go on the march in a beautiful military-style coat – choose navy for a colour that will never date. Team it with winter’s must-haves: a skinny-rib poloneck, printed chiffon dress and slouchy butter-soft leather boots. Checks appeal Oversized checks are a great way to make a statement this season, and can also add a pop of colour to a neutral palette. Wear with wide-leg trousers and a silk shirt, or pair with pieces in different textures…

winter florals

Floral dresses are a huge trend. Add a belt to cinch you in at the waist and pair with 1970s-style knee-high boots. Team florals with autumnal colours and tweed for a heritage-inspired daytime look. Gothic-style florals work perfectly with luxe velvet. Just add party flats for laid-back evening attire.…
