1 Scan the fields for finch and thrush flocks and sometimes Corn Bunting. Damp patches can attract Bearded Tit, Cetti’s Warbler, Water Rail, Snipe and Water Rail, with a chance of Jack Snipe.
2 The walk across the levels should produce a host of Lapwings and Golden Plovers, Curlew, Redshank, Wigeon, corvids, Sky Lark and feral geese, plus wintering thrushes, White-fronts, Brent Geese, Marsh Harrier and Merlin. Check the canal for Grey Wagtail, Green Sandpiper and Kingfisher, plus Raven and Buzzard along the hillside.
3 The hide overlooking Carter’s Flood often attracts Crestedwaders, Little Egret, Grey Heron and Kingfisher, plus finches, Reed Bunting and Meadow Pipit. A good spot for Barn Owl at dusk.
4 The bushes at Toots Rock attracts roving tit flocks that may harbour a Goldcrest, Chiffchaff…
