1 Check the mudflats and creeks in front of the visitor centre for waders; typically, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Redshank, Curlew and Turnstone, plus a good chance of Sanderling, Knot and Grey Plover. Little Egret, Grey heron, Shelduck and gulls including Mediterranean, Little and Yellow-legged Gulls are all likely, plus a late Sandwich or Common Terns. Peregrine and Kestrel hunt here.
2 From Sandsfoot Castle, scan the harbour for Great Crested Grebe and wildfowl, such as Shelduck and as the season progresses, Wigeon, Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Brent Goose, Black-necked Grebe and Pintail are likely. Check the rocky margins for Turnstone, Black Redstart and Rock Pipit. The scrub around the castle attracts migrant Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Goldcrest and Firecrest, plus tits, finches and thrushes.
