Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy will release his debut solo album Year Of The Tiger on March 9. The 12-song concept record was inspired by the loss of his father when Kennedy was a child. Stone Temple Pilots have recruited Jeff Gutt as their new frontman, and will release a new album in spring 2018. Gutt replaces the late Chester Bennington, who had left in 2016 to focus on Linkin Park. Three new species of microbe have been named pseudotrichonympha leei, pseudotrichonympha lifesoni and pseudotrichonympha pearti in tribute to the members of Rush. Joan Jett is the subject of Bad Reputation, a new full-length documentary from acclaimed video director Kevin Kerslake. The documentary will premiere at the Sundance festival in January.…

IN FEBRUARY 1969 Jethro Tull were touring the US for the first time. We flew out rather on spec and the gigs were quite sporadic. FIVE YEARS IN, Planet Rockstock – Planet Rock’s very own bespoke gathering – has become one of the highlights of the rock calendar, but it’s a festival that nearly never was. The inaugural event in Great Yarmouth in 2013, headlined by Uriah Heep, Hawkwind and The Temperance Movement, came within an inch of getting flooded, with a full site evacuation on the eve of its opening. RUSH A Farewell To Kings – 40th Anniversary UME/ANTHEM/OLE Triple-disc celebration of the Canadian power trio’s landmark 1977 album. IT WAS the unmitigated success of their 1976 dystopian hard rock colossus 2112 that freed Rush from interfering record company bods – and a good job, too. In June 1977, had any artist and repertoire person visited Rockfield Studios in South Wales to check how the follow-up to 2112 was coming along, they’d likely have had a seizure. Birdsong, mock-baroque intros, and producer Terry Brown gravely intoning about “the black hole of Cygnus X-1” on said song’s intro do not, on the face of it, a hit rock album make. It’s the sound of their ex-guitarist Kelly Johnson’s ashes being shaken. Kelly, who died in 2007, left some of her remains to her old bandmates. BLUE ÖYSTER CULT Spectres CBS, 1977 THERE ARE two things everybody knows about Blue Öyster Cult. One is their timeless hit single (Don’t Fear) The Reaper. The other is that they once had the greatest gothic logo of all time. Sure, Motörhead’s came close, but B.Ö.C.’s took first prize, umlaut and all. Blue Öyster Cult’s logo also came with a cryptic symbol, based on the astrological sign for Kronos, apparently. If you spotted that squiggly image on a badge in the ’70s or early ’80s you knew its owner was a rock fan of distinction and taste (and probably a dreadful smart-arse too). What food would you cook on a good night in? Maybe something from the sea, something from the land and then some strong drinks in place of dessert. I have a recipe which combines my Italian father’s amazing shrimp dish and my Singaporean mother-in-law’s spicier version of it. You need olive oil, chopped garlic, red chilli flakes, black pepper, a touch of salt and sugar, flour and some really fresh, super-clean large shrimp. First you heat the garlic until it’s just barely golden in the olive oil, then add the shrimp – dusted with the flour, chilli flakes and sugar – for a second. ELECTRIC WIZARD Wizard Bloody Wizard SPINEFARM Dorset stoner Satan-worshippers’ ninth unholy offering. Those who’ve lately lamented the passing of AC/ DC’s Malcolm Young, not to mention Black Sabbath, but who can’t find it in their hearts to supplant them with any of contemporary metal’s big-hitters, should surely be directed to the gates of Electric Wizard. This elusive THC-imbibing troop were formed in Wimborne, Dorset in 1993 by one Jus Oborn, the remorseless spawn of occultist Wessex biker hippies. Across such monolithic double-albums as Come My Fanatics… (1997) and Dopethrone (2000) they quickly came to define the stoner-metal sound which burgeoned post-grunge. Yet, they’ve also nurtured a rare mystique – borderline arty and actively beyond the law, as Oborn’s rap sheet (for torching a car right outside a police station, etc)…

ROYAL BLOOD/ AT THE DRIVE IN MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2017 Alexandra Palace, London AS THE new millennium dawned, At The Drive In were being tipped as rock music’s Next Big Thing on the strength of their brilliantly fractious Relationship Of Command album and a succession of incendiary live shows. That 17 years on the El Paso, Texas quintet are playing second fiddle here to rock music’s newest Next Big Thing illustrates that life doesn’t always work out as planned.
