Its cover featured the cause’s leader, Cesar Chavez, and the story inside described a “tiny, tough assistant” named Dolores Huerta. Just a few weeks ago, we learned, yet again, how tough Huerta is when she came forward to join other women in claiming that they had been sexually assaulted by Chavez, a lion of America’s left. “I have kept this secret long enough. My silence ends here,” said Huerta, a fierce advocate for women and workers. In the late 1960s, Marion Moses, then a nurse for farmworkers with no health care, landed on the East Coast to replicate successful West Coast organizing, boycotting grapes and other products picked by exploited workers. That’s why I ended up picketing in front of an A&P store in New York, and going to California to march and organize a press conference. Through this activism, I got to know Dolores Huerta, a fierce political organizer helping farmworkers around the country secure better pay and protections. Pope Leo XIV SPIRITUAL FORCE By Martin Scorsese The election of Pope Francis, a man I came to know and love as a friend, marked a turning point in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the first Pope born outside of Europe since the Middle Ages and the first Jesuit.
