the short film awards of 2014 begin!

Beginning this spring and building on its popular success over the past three years, the 2014 Short Film of the Year Awards promises to be bigger and stronger than ever. Thanks to continued collaboration with Sweet Protection and EpicTV, the Short Film of the Year Awards has become the #1 kayaking film event, online and beyond. Every year, about 50 films battle to become the best of the year in whitewater kayaking. The primary goal of the Short Film Awards is not to compile a series of stunts on film, but rather to celebrate two key elements of modern kayaking: paddling and cinematography. It is an occasion to discover new talents, exciting places, and alternative visions of our sport, and every year the winner is, above all, a movie that tells a…

In February of 2012, Aniol Serrasolses logged the first descent of this 110-foot, complex and consequential drop. In December of 2013, German paddler Pirmin Dlugosch ran the second descent, escaping the dangerous bottom right eddy with the help of his safety crew. Several days later, and six years after first laying eyes on the waterfall, Evan Garcia decided to take on this monstrous beauty. Despite a solid line, Evan rolled up at the bottom to realize that his boat had folded on his leg on impact, resulting in a broken left tibia.…

northforkchampionship organizer, james byrd

As a proud media sponsor of the North Fork Championship for the second year in a row, we caught up with James to see what’s in store for the race in 2014. James, tell us about the feedback you’ve received on the first two editions of the NFC? There has been nothing but very positive feedback, and it’s great to have that energy to keep the momentum of the event rolling! Is there any mainstream coverage scheduled? TV? Live coverage? We are super stoked to have River Roots as our film media for the NFC. They have done a great job along with Forge Motion Pictures to really show what the event is all about these last two years. Definitely interested in having live coverage on TV, that is a main goal, and we…

exploring michoacan , mexico

A bump and a stop woke me up. It was dark, and I looked out through a gap in the blinds. Large boulders completely blocked the road about 50 feet in front of the van. A group of men outside the van carried machine guns and wore black ski masks. They were talking at each other, on the verge of shouting. The air inside the van was charged. No one in the front seat was talking. The men outside cracked their machine guns on the side door window, WHAM WHAM WHAM. The door handle was being hauled on. They wanted us all out — NOW. All I could think was “OH — FUCK” The dream This trip had been in the works for a long time, but I was held back for…

KS: You had an amazing year in 2013. Agua Azul, Murchison Falls on the Nile, the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, a all-ladies’ Iceland filming mission… How did all that come together? MW: I did have an incredible year last year! I hadn’t planned anything at the start of the year, so I took every opportunity that came up, and it turned out great!! KS: Let’s start with Agua Azul. That place seems unreal! Tell us about the trip. MW: We were in Mexico to shoot for Teva’s latest film Beyond the Drop. The crystal blue whitewater of the Agua Azul is breathtaking, but indeed quite tricky. The rocks are super grippy and there isn’t much water going over the waterfalls, which makes it super hard to not get over vertical. There was…
