‘If tarmac was laid in heaven, this’d be it’

MY HOME COUNTY of Lincolnshire has some great riding, great roads and even half-decent scenery... but not so much in my particular corner of it; I live a good 20 miles in any direction from a decent piece of tarmac. So my favourite ride isn’t exactly local; it starts six hours and forty minutes, or 374 miles, from my gaff — not what you’d call convenient. But at least it means I’m never likely to take its splendour for granted. I live in envy of riders who have the A82 and A87 on their doorstep — and it’s why I dream of living somewhat closer there myself, one day. Best day to ride Being in the heart of tourist Scotland means there’s never a queue of traffic. But, as you’d expect, tourist traffic can be a pain, crawling up the hills in holiday season and the ever-present risk of wild cyclists hogging the road. Best bit The run out of Invergarry up to the view overlooking Loch Garry on one side, then the summit with Loch Loyne and Loch Cluanie to the left and right is simply ferociously awesome. It’s the section that makes my heart beat faster just thinking about it. Be careful For some reason, the first set of bends out of Tyndrum always confounds me; stringing them together into a coherent sentence is tricky and it reminds me of the Verandah on the Isle of Man TT circuit.
