‘It’ll still be a while before electric bikes can match petrol’ This is my favourite time of the year to be a biker and I’ve been lucky enough to cover 2000 miles on a variety of bikes this month. However, the highlight was our GT trip to North Yorkshire; the Tracer GT, Super Duke GT and GSX-S1000 GT are all wonderfully engaging bikes, able to destroy distances and then thrill when you get to your destination. The ride up the A1 to get there was a breeze and the fill-up at Scotch Corner was as much about emptying bladders as filling tanks but it did make me think that life wouldn’t be quite so easy on an electric bike. Picos de Europa, Spain Here is my Africa Twin Adventure Sport and my uncle Brian Black’s Tiger 1200 during a recent tour to the Picos. We covered 5300 miles in just under four weeks — 700 of which were just getting to Plymouth to catch the ferry! We started in the Picos, then rode over to the border into Andorra. We then went across Southern France, into Morocco, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and lastly the Netherlands before heading home to Scotland. For both of us, this was our first motorbike tour of Europe and we are already planning next year’s trip. I’M DUE TO meet Mike at the excellent 2MT café on the A1060 near Writtle, just west of Chelmsford. I think I’ve got there early but Mike’s there already thinking about a second coffee (Lavazza — I can recommend it). Best time to ride “We ride it all year and it’s always good. Early spring is good if it’s dry, as you get better sight lines across the fields. Outside rush hour is best if possible. And if you’re riding at the weekend, make it early in the morning — it can get very busy later.” Best bit “Bradwell to Latchingdon has a nice mix of fast sweepers and tighter corners and pretty good visibility. Great Bardfield to Finchingfield is good too — a fun, quick section — and every way out of Finchingfield is a proper road.” Be careful at… “The last section of the Boreham Road — it’s quite narrow and some people drive too fast down it. The section into Great Bardfield is also very narrow, with a few parked cars. Patience…

WILL THE PETROL-ENGINE BAN MEAN THE END OF BIKING?

THE UK COULD be one of the first places in the world to ban the sale of new ‘nonzero-emissions’ motorcycles nationwide — essentially consigning the internal combustion engine (ICE) to the history books and forcing an accelerated switch to electric power. If the latest Government plan passes into law, the sale of new petrol bikes will end in 2035. For smaller bikes including mopeds and all learner-legal ‘L3-A1’ bikes up to 125cc and 15hp, the cutoff is 2030. So it’s electric or bust for the industry; but is this really going to happen and what does it mean? Will all manufacturers be developing electric bikes? Yes.
