Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. opening ceremony for the seoul hall of urbanism & architecture

On Mar. 28 the Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture officially opened. The building was previously used as an annex of the National Tax Service, which was located between Deoksugung Palace and the Seoul Metropolitan Council. This was dissolved and rebuilt as the Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture, consisting of three basement floors and one ground floor on the site with a total floor area of 2,998m2 . The ‘Chronicle of Seoul’ by Terminal 7 Architects (Zoh K-Chan, Ji Kang-il), which was selected in Oct. 2015, has thus finally revealed itself. 2019 seoul biennale of architecture and urbanism pre-biennale symposium

The 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (Seoul Biennale) Pre-Biennale Symposium was held at Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture on Mar. 27. Urban and architectural experts from home and abroad were invited to the event, which was set up as a venue that would embrace the concept of the ‘Collective City’, the exhibition theme of the 2019 Seoul Biennale. The 2019 Seoul Biennale will be held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Donuimun Museum Village, Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture and Sewoon Plaza area from Sep. 6 to Nov. 10, and will consist of four exhibition programmes and participation programmes covering each theme. new imagination for the dmz

‘DMZ’, an exhibition about the transition of demilitarized zone, is now on show free of charge at the Culture Station Seoul 284 from Mar. 21 to May 6. Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and organized by the Korea Craft & Design Foundation, the exhibition has been planned and managed by Kim Sunjung (president, Gwangju Biennale Foundation). The exhibition, which consists of five themes, and presents different ways of looking at the DMZ and the border area, features 50 contributors including artists, architects, designers, and scholars. A big bell tower catches the eye at the entrance of the exhibition. ‘spectres of the state avant-garde’ has returned to arko museum

On Mar. 27, the homecoming exhibition of the Korean Pavilion of the 16th Venice Biennale opened in the Arko Museum. In the Korean Pavilion, exhibited from May 26 to Nov. 25 in 2018, the ‘Spectres of The State Avant-Garde’ was planned jointly by Park Seongtae (founding director, Junglim Foundation), Choon Choi (professor, Seoul National University), Park Jeonghyeon(editor-in-chief, Mati Books) and Chung Dayoung (curator, MMCA). It focused on the works of Korean Engineering Consultants Corporation (KECC), a thinktank under the Korean government’s development system of the 1960s and featured the country’s best architects. announcement of three prize winners for public design competitions for project seoul

Recently, the major prize winners for public design competitions for public buildings have been announced. Seoul city announced on Mar. 15 that the architects’ office SoA has been selected for the public contest for Metropolitan Small Manufacturers’ Support Center, along with the D·Lim architects for Municipal Song-Pa Silver Care Center on Mar. 28, and the Mass Studies for International Invited Design Competition for Main Street of Yangdong-District on Apr. 4. First of all, the Metropolitan Small Manufacturers’ Support Center design competition intends to establish buildings in Seongsu-dong in Seoul and to support the sustainable growth of urban small manufacturers, for which a proposal by the architects’ office SoA (Park Yeongseo, Kang Yerin, Lee Chihoon) was selected. the 1st korean association for architectural history award winner: bucheon art bunker b39

The Korean Association for Architectural History (KAAH) has conferred the 1st Korean Association for Architectural History Award on Bucheon Art Bunker B39 (see SPACE No. 610) by Kim Kwangsoo (principal, studio_K_works). The jury board carried out a document review and on-site inspection on recently constructed buildings over the past year to find examples that best explored the strata of time, paying attention to the historical contexts of architecture and cities. Aside from Bucheon Art Bunker B39, Gusan-dong Village Library (see SPACE No.580) by Choi Jaewon (principal, FLO architects) and Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture by Zoh K-Chan (principal, Terminal 7 Architects) were also nominated, and the winner was decided after the final presentation held at the Monthly Academic Seminar in Mar.
