PRO-JECT X1 Many of the items that make it onto our Showstopper page do so because of their striking looks. But this month’s entry is every bit as easy on the ear as it is on the eye. Back in 1991, when CDs were beginning to dominate the audio sphere, Pro-Ject went against the grain by unveiling a high-end turntable called the P1. Now, nearly 30 years on, the Austrian manufacturer has created a direct successor to that now-iconic design, using more modern materials and production methods. Handbuilt on a heavyweight MDF chassis with either a gloss black/white or premium walnut-wood veneer, the X1 boasts a minimalist aesthetic that’s infinitely modish.
