most eagerly-awaited masters ever?

This year’s Majors have actually been pretty good. I really missed the Open, but Collin Morikawa’s dramatic PGA win and Bryson’s brutal demolition of Winged Foot made for great TV, even without the roars from the crowd. However, the one event I really want to watch is the Masters. It won’t have any patrons. The azaleas won’t be in bloom. We’re hearing cooler temperatures and a different wind will make it tougher than April. But it’s still the Masters, at Augusta National – the most familiar of all the major championship venues. And in a year when just about everything has been very unfamiliar, I can’t wait for the opening tee shots, those super-quick greens, Amen Corner, Rae’s Creek, Sunday’s flags, Tiger defending, Rory going for the Grand Slam, Bryson’s gameplan, the…

RUSPER GOLF CLUB The 18-hole course in West Sussex is to be returned to farmland after financial difficulties forced the club to shut. Patshull Park in Wolverhamption and Magnolia Park in Buckinghamshire have also gone, and Bulwell Hall in Nottingham is due to follow. DANNY LEE Lee withdrew from the US Open citing a wrist injury, but six-putting from four feet and racking up a quintuple bogey nine probably had something to do with it. It was hard to watch. PRINCE ANDREW The Duke of York splashed out £15,848 of public money on a private jet to watch The Open at Royal Portrush. We got there on £99 easyJet flights……

ijp’s defining ryder cup moments

1 In 2004, on his Ryder Cup debut at Oakland Hills, he won his singles match 3&2 against Chris Riley to start his unbeaten singles run. 2 One of Nick Faldo’s picks at Valhalla in 2008, Poults didn’t disappoint. Even though Europe lost, he won four points from five matches. 3 At Medinah in 2012, Poulter kept Europe in it. Paired with Rory in the Saturday fourballs, he made five birdies in the last five holes to beat Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner on the last. The result inspired the team, who overhauled a four-point deficit on Sunday to win.…

the golden years

One of the biggest problems in getting young people into golf is that it is still seen as a rich old man’s sport, which for many reasons is far from the truth. But unless family members or close friends play golf, it’s probably very low on the list of sports played by young people. For some reason, golf isn’t taught in schools yet football, rugby and other classic sports are. Golf would have many advantages if it was added to the P.E. curriculum, not least the potential to introduce more women into the game. There’s also far less contact compared to other sports, which is a big factor given the current climate. I realise a typical sports field may limit the clubs they can hit, but it would still give kids…

perfect 10

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Fred Couples wearing the spikeless Ecco shoes at Augusta, the company has launched a limited-edition version based on the original design but updated for 2020. The Ecco Golf Street 10 features the same off-colour upper, but with the addition of bronze detailing and a ‘Hybrid 10’ logo on the heel. Inside there’s a new ultra-light midsole material called Phorene, which offers improved comfort and shock absorbency, and the shoe even comes with an anniversary key ring and contemporary shoe box. Couples will be wearing it for the first time at this year’s Masters, but you can order yours for £220. For details, see global.ecco.com…

inside a covid tournament bubble

The driving range is closed, the locker room is empty and the clubhouse is nearly deserted. Ordinarily, several hundred spectators would be in attendance for the English Men’s Open Strokeplay Amateur Championship, hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars of tomorrow. But these are not normal times. Members and visitors have been urged to stay away, while all 144 players are under strict instructions to arrive no earlier than 75 minutes before their tee time. Those who do are turned away by two security guards on the gate and asked to wait. This is the second of four rounds to be played in as many days at Sherwood Forest in Nottingham, but the rules remain just as strict. You can’t go anywhere without registering first, and having had a temperature…
