THE WEB DESIGNER MISSION To be the most accessible and inspiring voice for the industry, offering cutting-edge features and techniques vital to building future-proof online content Snap to it CSS is top dog when it comes to styling on the Web. And the specification is simply getting better and better. It has come a long way over the last few years, and is potentially a very powerful weapon in any web designer’s toolset. “Feature queries are a way to test whether a browser supports a particular CSS property-value combination. They virtually remove the need for feature-detection libraries like Modernizr for CSS” There are so many exciting features that are now ready to go, or are very close to getting the green light across the browser support board. That’s why Web Designer decided it was time…

how is css being used in 2019?

It’s hardly a rare occasion when Web Designer mentions that the web is ever evolving, but it is. All our favourite technologies and tools are constantly pushing forward and it is always good to see/know what’s happening. This issue it is CSS — more specifically, the State of CSS survey that has caught our eye. It seems that CSS is a little late to the teenage rebellion party, being over 20 years old, but it ‘is finally dyeing its hair pink and getting a tattoo just like it’s always secretly wanted’. Better late than never, you crazy CSS. To help finance the 2019 State of CSS survey, its logo has made its way onto a t-shirt (with annotated code snippets). Read the survey, buy a t-shirt, look good, and help ensure…

building world-class accessibility

Accessibility is a word that may conjure different meanings based on your life experiences. However, disability comes in many different forms. The World Health Organisation estimates that more than a billion people — or 15% of the world’s population — live with some form of disability. In the UK alone, ‘Purple Pound’ spending power is estimated at more than £249bn per year, while businesses are estimated to lose £2bn a month by overlooking the needs of disabled people. Although social attitudes and the technology we use have taken great strides forward, these statistics illustrate how businesses are missing out on a huge opportunity by failing to cater for every type of prospective user. Living with invisible disabilities myself — including Asperger’s, dyslexia, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and osteoarthritis — showed me that…
