Welcome, wild ones. We have so much to say but, first, give thanks to the ones who came before us. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live. We recognise their continuing connection to the land, water and community and pay our respects to the elders — past, present and emerging. Their ways have taught us to draw deeply from the living wisdom that surrounds us — the trees, plants, soil, air and ocean — for it is there that we can be truly wild. Hello, marvellous human. What is a quality you love about yourself and one you love about your work? I love that I’ve mastered the art of manifestation. I’ve created a lot of freedom and time for myself in life to enjoy and do stuff that I love, and I believe it’s because I am powerful at manifesting. You spend the years from playground to university campus sardine-packed next to a surplus of same-age peers. Making friends is a cinch — everyone is tackling first-day nerves, playground drama, adolescence, new love and university deadlines together. But the transition from adulthood leaves this convenient set-up behind. College grads relocate, starting their social life from scratch; full-time jobs and romantic relationships edge out the time you once had to build friendships; and playground days are behind you. I slowly sip my chai tea as the game loads on my laptop. I’m not sure if it’s the jaunty upbeat music or the caffeine hit or both, but I find myself smiling. My smile fades when I’m hit with the character-creation screen. Which species do I choose, human or pixie? Specifically, human male or female, or pixie male or female? I’m struck with the thought that, if I were a pixie, I wouldn’t have a gender. Or, at the very least, I’d be both genders. Because why on earth would a fantastical species want to be governed by a binary? I end up choosing human female because it’s what I know, and I think it’s what I want.
