James Gale Managing Editor Apple Arcade! With gaming titans like Capcom and Konami on board, an all-you-can-play multi-device library of games is hard to beat. Martin Smith Group Senior Designer The new iPhone’s low-light capabilities were the most impressive demo, by a country mile. I really look forward to trying them out. Bob Canning Staff Writer I’m happy with my current Apple gear, but I fully intend to subscribe to Apple TV+. I can’t wait to watch The Morning Show. Alison Drew Sub Editor It’s about time I updated my iPhone, and I love the new cameras on the 11 Pro. They certainly won me over. Ian Osborne Editor I want that watch! I’d really like a new Hermes model in black, but it’s out of my price range, so I’ll get a Nike one instead. Alyssa Falcon Staff Writer The new iPhone 11 comes in an…

editor’s letter//

So now they’re here. The 2019 iPhones were announced to great fanfare, along with a great new Apple Watch and a refreshed entry-level iPad. But what reason is there to upgrade? Ultimately, that’s something everyone has to decide for themselves, but here’s my advice. If you’re excited about the outstanding new cameras, or have an ageing iPhone, now’s the time to invest in a new model. If you already have a recent iPhone and are perfectly satisfied with its photographic capabilities, stick with it for a little longer. The Series 5 sees the Apple Watch finally come of age. Over time, great exercise and emergency features have been added, such as waterproofing for swimming, a heart rate monitor and fall alert. But it’s the always-on Retina display that puts the final…

And don’t forget, our Star Letter wins a prize. A Tsunami of e-Waste Where do dead and obsolete computers and mobile devices go? According to Mary Creagh, the UK MP for Wakefield, they’re built to break down after a few years to ‘create profit for the companies’. Is she right? I have a couple of Apple laptops in my attic that work just fine, but are too far behind the zeitgeist to be useful, and my last two iPhones and an iPad are similarly retired. Is there anything we can do? KT Hodges, Walsall,…

What goes around, comes around. For a while, beginning about seven or eight years ago, buying full-priced software and replacing it every few years went out of date. In came subscription models, with suites like Adobe CS and Microsoft Office charging by the month and offering constant upgrades instead of a one-time fee. But in the last year or so, there seems to be a backlash against subscriptions. People want to go back to owning the software instead of just renting it, but without returning to the hellish prices associated with some of the now-on-subscription packages. The once-essential Microsoft Office feels like an afterthought for Mac owners, who have Apple’s own excellent (and free) apps to use instead. And the still-mighty Adobe is facing a real threat from companies like Serif,…

You can send us your technical troubles and perplexing problems in many different ways. You can tweet it, send us a Facebook message, drop us a line on our web page, email the editor or even write it out and send it by post. Yes, some people do still use snail mail. Messages Maladies Q: Why is it that some threads in my Messages app display a phone number instead of the person’s name? Sometimes the name suddenly changes to a number or email address even after I’ve been chatting to that person for a while. It’s very frustrating. Damien Vosser, Stone, Staffordshire A: This can happen for a variety of reasons. The easiest way to fix it is to open the Messages app, and in the top bar on your Mac go to…

the iphone 11 pro and the iphone 11 pro max

It’s the first iPhone to earn the coveted ‘Pro’ label. The iPhone 11 Pro and its inevitable phablet counterpart, the iPhone 11 Pro Max, are built for the Apple fan who wants to stay at the white-hot cutting edge of technology. They have the fastest processor and graphics processor ever used in a smartphone, a triple camera setup, an advanced new display, and a long-lasting battery. It could be argued that this 2019 update is all about the cameras, and other anticipated advances such as virtual and augmented reality features were absent. But on the other hand, maybe the new cameras are enough? They’re certainly streets ahead of even the high-end dual cameras found on the last generation of iPhones. So let’s take a look at Apple’s groundbreaking new iPhones. New…
