“The GREAT Australian dream of home ownership is still a part of OUR psyche despite the challenges young Australians face in BUYING their first abode.” As a nation, we are obsessed with property, homes, and renovating. I can’t stop thinking about the classic Australian film The Castle as I write this. The great Australian dream of homeownership is still a part of our psyche despite the challenges young Australians face in buying their first abode and I am pleased that our love of beautiful homes and interior photography continues. The amount of fabulous homes magazines, books, television shows, and digital offerings per head is incredible. And we are not just viewing – we are doing! Of H&G readers alone, 66 per cent renovated in the last year and a whopping 80…

your h&g

My husband and I recently purchased a property in the country and have decided to make a tree-change from living in inner-city Brisbane. This has always been a dream for him but I have been more reluctant as I enjoy all that the city has to offer. So I was thrilled to see that the August issue contained many rural sanctuaries. By the time I had finished the magazine, I was feeling excited about our move. Just because we are leaving the city does not mean that I need to compromise on style. Brooke Murray, West End, Queensland Improving with age Even though I am reading your new issue in an old house in desperate need of kitchen and bathroom makeovers, I am filled with hope for what it will become. A renovation…

right at home

Persistence, it seems, certainly pays off. At least that was the case for architect Ben Vitale of Vitale Design, who spent 12 months trying to persuade the owners of his now family home to sell it to him. He and his wife Jodi saw the property in Sydney’s south in passing, loved the quiet location and proximity to local rock pool, and could instantly visualise raising their children Everleigh, five, and Luca, four, there. “I knocked on the door and asked the owners if they wanted to sell,” says Ben. “Initially they said no, but finally they sold!” The 1920s bungalow was no prize, however, being in a total state of disrepair, with a disassembled Harley-Davidson motorbike occupying the living room and car parts in the bathroom. “But I could see…

at home with life & style

MY FIRST (ADULT) HOME A two-bedroom apartment that Jodi and I bought and fully renovated; we designed and styled it with a Mid-Century theme. It was a great apartment, but we outgrew it, and it wasn’t designed too well for young kids – everything was a little too precious. FAVOURITE RESTAURANT? Japanese restaurant Sokyo in Sydney (7), or closer to home, local Italian restaurant Giro Osteria in Cronulla. THE PROJECT I’M MOST PROUD OF Quarry House on the NSW South Coast. NEXT PURCHASE FOR THE HOME? Bookshelves and more art! You can’t go wrong with art; it can instantly transform an interior and will add another layer of homeliness and warmth to a living room. FAVOURITE COLOUR COMBINATION Blue and green. NEXT HOLIDAY DESTINATION I’m currently daydreaming about visiting Puglia in Italy (1). THE CREATIVES WHO…
