NLicata@enthusiastnetwork.com Back in early May, we drove the Chevy High Performance ’71 Camaro project and a few other company project cars out to the 2018 Holley LS Fest West in Las Vegas. Weeks prior, we spent a good amount of time tying up loose ends on the car and we were looking forward to getting seat time on the autocross, road course, and dragstrip. The 270-mile drive out to Las Vegas went flawless. The car ran great and I was feeling like we had a competitive ride that would do really well at the event. Evil Twins Frank Oliveri and Ronnie Palumbo both do very well representing the Bowtie brand within Australian drag racing Sportsman circles. The cousins field two nearly identical-looking and impressive-performing early-era Holden LC Torana cars. The official model designation for these Holden vehicles is Torana GTR XU-1; Holden is Australia’s equivalent to the Chevrolet brand under General Motors. This particular vintage model traces its origin back to the early 1970s when they were a special release from GM/Holden with the intent to contest within the Australian Touring Car Racing Series (using a 186ci six-cylinder engine). The race team’s Toranas are now very different animals compared to the original. Good enough really isn’t good enough … it must be spectacular. Or at least that’s what the perception is. Shoulders hunch up in direct relation to stress. Of course, it’s all nonsense. While some folks choose to be subjected to that tyranny, there are scores more of us who are completely happy to revive and love the memory, re-creating and remembering it with kindly patronage. With all the 1,000+ horsepower ratings permeating the pages of magazines and websites, it’s easy to get complacent about achieving those lofty numbers. After all, they’re seemingly so common that anyone with a salvage yard 5.3L, a couple of Chinese turbos, and some cleverly routed tubing is just a few degrees of timing away from the four-digit dyno club. It ain’t that easy. It’s true that the airflow capability of the LS engine family enables output in street engines that wasn’t even dreamt of for old-school small-block racing-engine builders, but getting there takes careful planning and prep work.
