welcome

Missing the early-season classic car events was just one of the many painful consequences of breaking my ankle in a snowboarding accident. Without those kickstarting events it felt like beginning the day without breakfast, and I’m not good on an empty stomach. As soon as I was out of my cast, I was hungry for automotive nourishment. Two days later I was soaking up the sun and an eclectic mix of cars in the unlikely surroundings of Hats & Horses in Menorca, where horsepower of the petrol-powered kind provided a sideshow to the main event. And handily, one of the star cars, a beautifully executed replica of the Shelby Mustang ‘Eleanor’ from the Nicolas Cage film Gone in 60 Seconds , allows me to stretch the equine metaphors to breaking point. Next…

‘you can feel the reams of latent power’

When I arrive, a Jensen Owners’ Club be-jumpered David Wright is sitting at his kitchen table with Classic Cars reader and consultant to the engineering and construction industries Jon Nield. Cups of tea have been semi-drained, there’s a book spread open and Jon’s dextrously spinning a miniature model around with his fingertips. ‘This is our exact car,’ he says, holding it up for me to see. ‘Here it is in print, too,’ he adds, pointing it out on the page of an open book. ‘It’s a Sixties car, but you feel like you’re stepping back into the Fifties. This interior is glorious, and surprisingly light and airy’ As well as having a mightily impressive collection, C-V8 owner David is also the author of British Sporting Cars in Miniature. The model in question…

jon’s dream drive list

Jensen C-V8 ‘My Uncle had one; I’ve always admired its lines and spec.’ Jaguar XK140 ‘I was given a spin in a DHC by Jaguar Heritage during Mille Miglia scrutineering a few years back.’ Datsun 240Z ‘I marvelled at one in York’s Datsun dealership on the bus to school.’ Alvis TD21 ‘It was wonderful being wafted around in my father’s beautiful TD.’ Frazer Nash Le Mans replica ‘Whenever I see one in action it just oozes style and performance.’ Triumph TR4A ‘My aunt and uncle had a Signal Red example. Surely Michelotti’s finest work for Triumph?’ AC Greyhound ‘An intriguing alternative to the Aston Martin DB4.’ Reliant Scimitar SE5A ‘My brother seemed to go through these like socks in the Eighties – torquey and very practical.’ Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing ‘True pipe-dream territory – I’ve been a passenger in one.’ Lotus Elan Sprint ‘Beautiful little car – I’d like to…

1971 TRIUMPH GT6 MKIII ‘I had a 1970 MkIII that I spent hours working on. I always regretted selling it, so in my mid-40s I had to have another one – this example always puts a smile on my face when I take it out.’ 1989 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SL (R107) ‘It’s had a refresh by the SL Shop and is now in very good condition. This is the one we use for long distance touring, including the west coast of Scotland and across Europe to Italy.’ 1991 MAZDA MX-5 ‘Actually a Eunos Roadster V-Special; I bought it new when I lived in Japan and had it shipped back to the UK on my return. I reluctantly sold it when I moved to Singapore in 1994.’ 1992 JAGUAR XJ-S 4.0 ‘The latest addition is a rewarding drive, especially with…

bmw i8 appeal is charging up

I’ve been waiting for the earliest 2014 examples of BMW’s otherworldly plug-in electric supercar to fall below £40k, but the i8 is holding strong. When you look at how desirable and hard to find the first Tesla roadsters have become, this could be another vision of the future that’s worth quietly tucking away. And, let’s face it, the i8 has a lot going for it – great looks, massive road presence, 155mph performance and no range anxiety. The 7.1Kwh lithium ion battery powering a 131bhp electric motor coupled to a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine means you’re good for 30 miles on battery only and the little petrol unit will always get you home. The sprint to 60mph takes just four seconds and you even get a faux engine soundtrack complete with gearbox…
