the big picture

We couldn’t let our celebration of Citroën’s centenary (p136) pass without touching on its competition history. And while Messrs Loeb & Co landed top honours in the WRC, even the humble 2CV got in on the action. Enduros from Paris-Kabul (1970) and Paris-Persépolis (1971) proved the publicity value in Deux Cheveaux rallying, so for 1974 Citroën’s competition department teamed up with fuel giant Total to launch 2CV Cross. This fabulous image was taken in 1977, the year 2CV Cross went international, with that year’s French title runner-up Patrick Lapie emerging victorious. The Hants & Berks Motor Club also persuaded Total to back a UK series on a 700m dirt track laid out by bulldozer at Blackbushe, Surrey, from 1975-’77, and 45 years on 2CV Cross continues to thrive in its homeland.…

There’s little doubt that 2019 has thus far belonged to Bentley. Since the beginning of the year, every major event has hosted a celebration of the great Briton’s centenary, and the wonderful Monterey Car Week (see p14) was no exception. It seemed that everywhere you looked there was a Cricklewood, Derby or Crewe classic – from Big Sur to Laguna Seca, Downtown Pacific Grove to the top step of the podium at the Pebble Beach concours. bentley is king of monterey

After a week of touring the California coast, Bentley owners gathered on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Resort on 18 August for a glorious tribute to the marque’s centenary. And it seemed only right that the coveted Best of Show at the world’s greatest concours should go to a Cricklewood car, as Sir Michael Kadoorie’s beautiful 1931 Bentley 8 Litre Sports Tourer purred across the stage to collect the trophy. The elegant Gurney Nutting-bodied machine is the sole survivor of this style and had already taken top honours in the 8 Litre category, one of six centennial classes ranging from 3 Litre (won by Bob Muggeridge’s 1927 Speed Model) to post-war, the latter landed by Anne Brockinton Lee’s 1952 R-type Continental. CONCOURS ON THE AVENUE MONTEVERDI 375L It was a close-run thing between a beautiful, rotisserie-restored BMW-Glas 1600GT and the stunning ’71 Monteverdi of Mark and Michelle Jansen from Queensland Australia. It’s one of an estimated nine right-hand-drive examples of the Chrysler 440-powered GT car, built in tiny numbers in Basel, Switzerland. The ‘Continental, European and Foreign Sport’ class had a wide-ranging line-up that encompassed everything from a Matra M530 to collector Mike Malamut’s perfectly restored Mazda R360 Coupé. lost bentley corniche reborn

The ill-fated Bentley Corniche that crashed during testing in France and was then destroyed in a Dieppe bombing raid in 1939, during the Second World War, has been recreated by Bentley and Mulliner in a remarkable project. The Corniche in part bridges the gap between the pre- and post-war Bentleys, effectively a fast and sporting iteration of the MkV, and its reincarnation was fast-tracked by company chairman and chief executive Adrian Hallmark as part of Bentley’s centenary celebrations. “It is a pivotal car in the history of Bentley,” Hallmark says. “It demonstrates that even then, this great British marque was at the cutting edge of design and technology.” Once tested and fettled, it will join the firm’s heritage fleet alongside two ‘Blowers’, an R-type and many others. victory for rare marina

The hugely popular Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional crowned a 1977 Morris Marina 1.3 Deluxe estate as its Best in Show on 20 July in Buckinghamshire, the car becoming the second Marina variant to take the award two years after it was won by a 1980 575 pick-up. The estate had been left in a shed for more than 15 years, but when current owner Michael Carpenter uncovered it he found a well-preserved car with original and tidy paint, so good it beat the runner-up, a 1978 Vauxhall Chevette E, to the top honour. The total entry hit 50 cars. Wagons proved popular, with a 1982 Peugeot 305 SR estate taking the People’s Choice Award.
