the big picture

Briggs Cunningham took two Cadillac Series 61s to Le Mans in 1950: a conventional Coupe de Ville and this wild 130mph streamliner, which swiftly earned itself the nickname ‘Le Monstre’. Here it’s cheered on by spectators in a scene that’s charmingly free from health and safety interference, the damage to its nose evidence of an earlier trip into a sandbank. Sitting on the standard 122in wheelbase and powered by a 331cu in V8 producing 160bhp, the Caddy finished 12th – just behind its standard sibling – but sealed a place in the hearts of fans, one of which was inspired to build a faithful replica to run in the original’s wheeltracks at the Le Mans Classic (see p120).…

At a time like this, when we all face an unprecedented challenge to our very way of life, it seems almost frivolous to talk about old cars. And yet now perhaps more than ever we need our passions, both for the distraction they can provide from the difficulties that beset us in our everyday lives and for the community that we have created around them – a community upon which we can all call for kinship and support. Which is why here at C&SC we are going to continue to bring you the very best stories we can from around the classic world, to keep you on the road between our pages even when you can’t leave your home. And you can help us, too: we’d love to hear the stories…

stuttgart showcase

Covering more than 140,000m 2 spread across a whopping 10 halls at Messe Stuttgart, this year’s 20th edition of Retro Classics from 27 February-1 March was a massive event in every sense of the word. And with around 4000 cars on display, it was never going to be quick to get around – not even after two full days of the four could you have seen everything. With the globe in a heightened state of tension because of the coronavirus outbreak, many visitors stayed away; official figures claimed an attendance drop of more than a third from previous years to the 60,000 mark. And while there were noticeably fewer dealers from Italy, business trade didn’t seem to be overly affected, with sales reported to be strong across the weekend. However, the…

cogman’s show favourites

NSU SPORT-PRINZ Oozing patina from every Franco Scaglionedesigned Bertone surface, this super-cool Californian NSU upstaged many more premium-badged models. The quirky little West German-built sports coupé must have caused quite the stir among the SoCal locals cruising the streets in 1960 when it first appeared in the neighbourhood. With faded racing stripes and boasting a whopping 30bhp from its mighty 583cc two-cylinder motor, the rather cutely named Sport-Prinz races its way to 60mph in a blistering 26 seconds… I particularly loved the ‘Jesus loves you’ licence-plate surround. VW 411E VARIANT Not the prettiest car in attendance, but the quad headlamps of a VW Type 4 made an impression on everyone who visited auctioneer Classicbid. This example was for sale through an elderly German gentleman who had owned a car-sales business and had a…

amelia crowns duesy and 917

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance on the north-eastern Florida coast celebrated its 25th anniversary on 8March, and its continuing quality and prestige are a tribute to its founder and driving force, Bill Warner. Somehow the atmosphere manages to be more relaxed and less self-important than at other top concours, probably due in part to Warner’s insistence that members of the 90-strong judging team use their hearts at least as much as their heads. How a car speaks to you, he says, is more important than whether it has the correct pedal rubbers. Amelia names two Best in Show winners: Concours d’Elegance, and Concours de Sport. This year they were Sam Lehrman’s magnificent 1929 Duesenberg J-218, with Murphy Town Limousine body, and Rob Kauffman’s thunderous Porsche 917/30, as raced for Roger Penske…
