dear readers

We live in unsettling times. You know what I mean by this. In short: anything can happen. The odds are that the unlikely will occur and not only occur but establish its unlikeliness in mainstream culture, thought and practise. Then, at some point, the unlikely becomes the everyday. This is what is happening to colour in interiors. Colour used to be the rank outsider, the most likely to not really succeed. We liked it in theory, but much like recycling, electric cars, going vegan and Uber, we were less keen on the execution. Take teal. Three years ago the thinking was: okay, but just a bit. So long as there is 99 per cent more taupe in the room to tame it. We had this idea that colour needed managing;…

STYLE Inspired by outer space and focused on lighting, the new collection of stellar pieces by British designer Lee Broom brilliantly play with sculptural forms in unusual proportions. cremadesign.co.za SCENT Multidisciplinary artist Nandipha Mntambo has teamed up with perfumer Tammy Frazer to create Dissonance, a richly organic scent that is strongly evocative of the artist’s work. Only 20 packages were produced (each comes with two lithographic prints by Nandipha) and are available at Robert Sherwood Design. robertsherwooddesign.com OBJECT Paying homage to the De Stijl movement, Kallista has created a sleek, minimalist tap – the Grid – that harnesses the power of negative space with its linear simplicity to create a quietly impactful bathroom piece. africa.kohler.com GEO-FORMS Whether it’s taking design cues from the composite strata of agate, such as Willowlamp’s Love Clover range of pendant lights, or…

‘my favourite colour is colour’

BUY ART THAT YOU LOVE ‘Last year – a busy one – I purchased this Andrzej Urbanski artwork from Everard Read at the Investec Art Fair for a client. I was clearly channelling my inner Peggy Guggenheim. Long story short, it made it as far as my own living room – and what a magnificent piece. The nachas that it gives me is absolutely priceless. I’d painted the walls a pale pink about six years ago (way ahead of the millennials) and love it to this day. Before the Urbanski there had been a collection of various works, but those have since been repositioned.’ ‘A guest bedroom and bathroom are the best rooms in the house to realise your eccentric side’ GO FOR BOLD ‘Once again, I purchased this pair of vintage headboards from…

This space demonstrates the potential of urban rejuvenation projects Just over a year ago, Victoria Yards was one of Jo’burg’s many forgotten spaces. Littered yards, roadways and dilapidated buildings stretched over its 30 000 square meters, all remnants of its past as a laundry-turned-chop shop. Today however, just east of the city’s CBD, the space now boasts a gallery, restaurant, art studios and event spaces; a welcome change for the suburb of Lorentzville. And far from being a sanctuary for the creative tastemakers of the city, the developers have created a space that includes the community in an authentic and considered way. At its inception, developer Brian Green envisioned an inner-city farm, but his idea of the urban rejuvenation project soon evolved and after only 14 months, the space already resembled a…
