Today, with abundant delight, I passed on my 2018 winter coat, because I refused to need its symbolic mantle of winter inversion any more. It was a great coat. I loved it, wore it nonstop around the house, around town, formally, informally, for five months. But as the sun came up this morning, particularly crisp and determined to bust out a new season, I thought it was time to adjust and embrace change, and for the first time in a while I’m relishing the prospect of six months of skyrocketing Celsius. Summer is the most affirming life force and, because it’s important to be in touch with that, we thought a how-to-do-summer manifesto would be a useful kicker feature to the season. What to do, where to go, how to do…

summer height’s high

The Zen Commandments 1. Keep it simple. We all tend to get a bit carried away sometimes, whether it’s an eight-course al fresco fiesta or an entire interior overhaul to welcome the new season. Slow down, take it easy. 2. Stop taking yourself so seriously. By this time of year you probably need a vacation from your boss as much as you do from yourself. Loosen up a bit, it’s probably not that big a deal. 3. Get a cabana. It’s the season of the pool pavilion – and for good reason. You’re going to be cooking here, playing games here, relaxing here – you name it, it’s the all-in-one summer solution. 4. Go off the grid. You heard us: switch off your data. A few days spent living in the moment rather than…

the ultimate grill guide: make the great outdoors greater

1 GRILL FACTOR The braais to own, from a small, mid-week meal for two to an al fresco crowd-feeding machine. 2 KOBUS BOTHA, Author of Le Braai Best cut of meat to grill Picanha. It’s a Brazilian rump cut. You grill the whole thing on the fat side until crispy, then slice it and grill on a super hot fire. Charcoal or gas I cook mainly with wood. I love to work with fire and it tastes better. Also, it’s romantic and manly. Gas is great when you don’t have a lot of time. Tip for amateurs Braai as often as you can. No quick fixes here, it’s an ancient skill. Go-to marinade I don’t marinade. Good meat, technique, salt and pepper. Best non-red-meat item to grill Fresh fish. Mistake amateurs make Not…
